It's so awesome to see Pagenaud win. I was cheering for Sato in those last laps - both he and Rossi are imo the last drivers you'd want to battle with late at Indy and Pagenaud did it. I remember him being the king of the underdogs and was thrilled when he got a ride on Penske, and won a title in that ride, but last years weird lack of performance had me thinking maybe something was wrong. If anything was it's rad to see him back on top. Amazing drive. Incredible race.

What a determined and courageous drive by Rossi today, was really rooting for him to take the win.

NBC uploaded 15 minute highlights on their YouTube channel
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1QQAU ... XXne54oCgQ

if you can find a NBCSN stream - the entire race will be re-broadcast in a hour

IndyCar will have the usual extended recap later on as well

tech is complete - results are official!

-

the White House has invited Penske & Pagenaud for a visit (don't remember this happening at all in recent memory for a defending 500 winner or series champ)

WISH - Channel 8 in Indy is reporting that Zach Veach has a leg injury, and hasn't been cleared to race (for now)

I think there was more action, certainly after each restart. I would agree that the middle hundred laps were the deepest part of the fuel economy race and were lighter on action, but overall it was a good race.

Not as much passing as with the DW12, but this was a much more classic style of 500 and that was a hell of a finish.

MUCH better than last year's race and depending on how the Haloscreen affects the aero, it will be year three with essentially the same package and an even better chance of getting a good race.

Wasn't the most exciting race, I'm glad Simon won though, gutted for Dixon too

Great race, Indy never dissapoints. Where did Sato come from in the end? He was invissible all race and then he hunted the leaders at the end, for me he was the surprise of this race.

I think Taku got lucky in pitting just before the Rahal\Seabass mess, which stopped everyone from getting past him as he was being serviced as they were having to stick to a speed limit as well. Came out in 6th or 7th, and from there it was maybe the tyres that made the difference.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

This almost calls for a "Bad Luck Brian" meme.

Btw, Bourdais was issued a 30 secs. penalty for causing the late collision so he ends up 30th in the box charts rather than 27th.

He had to make an extra pitstop after the first cycle since a wheel got jammed there. Lost a lap and spend like 130 laps trying to get it back. Pitting before the Bourdais/Rahal crash got him back into contention though.

I thought that was a hell of a race. Usually, Indy in the past was 150 laps of survival, 50 laps of go for broke. With Pag having such a fast car and the race feeling like it was going to be determined on fuel mileage, there was no reason to push like a lunatic to get to the lead. Riding in the draft and saving fuel seemed like the best idea, hence the lack of balls to the wall craziness. Once fuel mileage was out of the equation the race came down to a duel between the two fastest cars in a shootout for the ages.

Don't know what people wanted to see but I sure got what I was looking for.

Thankfully, no one crashed or caused a yellow after that last restart. That would've been shit.

Also, I'm glad no one had a huge shunt.

The last few laps were nailbiters but the race overall was quite tedious and admittedly it didn't hold my attention. But yes, those last laps were amazing. Great skill on display by quite a few. Even that shithead Ferucci drove pretty well, passing RHR for 7th. Somehow he is 10th in points and the highest placed rookie, yet his finishes have been pretty mediocre apart from the 500 (damn double points).

I went out with my wife and mother-in-law yesterday to a couple wineries and a casino, so I left the house on lap 3 of the race, but recorded it to watch later. I made it a point to stay off social media to avoid spoilers. And then my fucking NBC Sports app on my phone sent me a push notification spoiling the ending. :slaphead:

Even with knowing the outcome, WHAT A RACE. The first few laps were hairy, then we got into fuel conservation mode, but that's just going to happen no matter what package you throw out there. Even in the aero kit days, we saw mostly riding around saving fuel in that middle stint, it just happened to be so easy to pass that people would just essentially swap positions. But once we got down closer to the finish, people started getting a lot more aggressive. Rossi was absolutely nuts with some of his passes. And that finish was phenomenal. One of the best races I've ever seen. God I love Indy. Now I'm sad that it's another 364 days until the next one.

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread, but there was a bad incident in one of the vintage cars during Saturday's Legends Day festivities. The driver, Cody Donahue, had some fractures in his legs when he hit the Turn 2 wall head-on in a privately-owned 1967 Roger McCluskey Eagle:
