Interesting article I found, speculative and slightly dramatic like a lot of them tend to be, but has some good insight from an orthopedic surgeon as to what the described type of injuries can mean, and also what to interpret (or not) from what we've seen and read so far.

this is pure speculation - it almost sounds like the hans did its job for his neck, but the forces were enough to cause a fracture below the hans device's effective zone in the thoracic area of the spine. its like the hans saved the neck, but by strengthening and stiffening the neck area the next weakest point on the body becomes the upper thoracic spine

Im really worried about Wickens. That Schmidt - who obviously has dealt with a spinal injury sees him potentially back in a car is what gives me hope.

They need to raise the walls I think or else cars are just going to keep getting in the fence.

I don't think they need to do anything, unless they invent a safer kind of fence.

The guy made a mistake and paid for it dearly.

RHR explained it pretty well in his interview, IMO. And I think he was right to think the turn was his given how far ahead he was and that it was THE FUCKING TUNNEL TURN ON THE FIRST FLYING LAP OF A 500-MILER.

It's a single lane turn...as will power basically said that day. I sure hope Wickens can return to competition.

Yeah, I was very critical of RHR first, but in hindsight it was easier for Wickens to back off of it than for RHR to keep a wide line while looking at his mirror flat out into the turn. It's not like he just cut him off either, he made a late entry and left half a car width to give Wickens the time and space to let go of it. It's more of a road circuit defending technique but it was fair.

Although I used to do the same back when I started racing ovals in NR2003 online with you guys, and got SCOLDED if I didn't leave a full car width on someone that had half a spoiler in :p
Still bitter about it.

That wasn't Robbie's corner. He wasn't anywhere near far enough along side to assume RHR would give it to him. I heard, "looking inside, looking, inside, still...(contact)..."

I chalk that one up to a racing deal. It was a stupid racing deal though. Lap 11 of a 200 lap, 500 mile race is not the time to force it through one the fiercest corners in oval racing.

He'd stalled out anyway so should have backed off way sooner, I know others got through the corner side-by-side during the race without crashing (or backed out earlier), but blaming RHR for it isn't right.

Medical update on Wickens

:( That him breathing on his own and speaking is good news (or news at all) makes me realize this is probably really really bad to be honest. I don't know anything about such medical things but things sound extremely bad at least as far as his career goes. I guess that's narrow-sited and one should be happy and grateful he's at least alive and okay enough to talk and things. It just sucks. It really, really sucks.

Has the G-forces Wickens was sustained for been made public? Kenny Bräck survived over 200G's, yet lived to race another day. A week after his accident, his life was still in the balance. That doesn't say anything about Wickens of course, but it gives you a bit of perspective.

Not sure if these videos from the stands were posted here of Wickens' horrible accident:

Warning: serious accident

Keep hoping for the best outcome with his undetermined spinal injuries, I guess at the moment we can just be thankful he survived.
