Yay, Indy on an oval bigger than 0.25 mile. Now I'm excited.

Unfortunately, as far as "large and flat" ovals go, Indy and Pocono are pretty much it in the US.
So many of the other ovals follow the "banked trioval" formula.

I would add a second race to Pocono and Indy.

500 and 400 miles races at both Indy and Pocono.

It would reduce their uniqueness though, wouldn't it?

Or race it in reverse to spice things up? No reason not to! Some walls/fences and pit arrangements may need to be altered for safety, but apart from that it would double the superspeedway racing, and add some novelty.

The Reverse 400

The Clockwise 400

The Leftie 400

The only largeish oval in Australia I know of is Calder Park Thunderdome, which reports on the 'Net seem to indicate is in pretty rotten condition at the moment.

With Lausitz reportedly closing, the only non-American largeish oval that I imagine Indycar could even consider is Rockingham, and that would probably need the full range of safety upgrades (eg SAFER barriers) first. (For a similar reason I assume a Latin American oval like Autódromo Ciudad de Rafaela is out of the question.)

Of course, if Indycar management goes insane, yes, there's always 'Dega and Daytona. :p

Welkom in South Africa has an oval, it is 1.5 miles in size.

That's a shame. I was watching the NASCAR race from 1988 at Calder the other day, and it looked like a pretty good track for racing. It's a shame that never really panned out - it would have been pretty cool to see all a full-fledged Winston Cup race in Australia.

Wasn't it some sort of issue over tobacco sponsorship that screwed it up?

only thing the Thunderdome is being used for is drifting on the front straight in recent years. Besides drag racing, I don't think Calder does much of anything on the national stage and hasn't been maintained for the level for a major series to race there. Kelly Racing / Nissan usually test their VASC cars there though.

dirt oval racing in Australia is still pretty big on the grassroots level, heck their national sprint car championship (World Series Sprintcars) were on TV over here for a year or 2, until they switched to the US style model using online PPV. Asphalt just never caught on over there for long-term, either with AUSCAR or when Liverpool was paved in the early 80's.
