But, I can't see Indycar being happy about running an event 6 weeks past the end of its season, nor Surfers returning the date to it's original march/april start of the season event to suit indycar. OR if the shorter circuit is suitable for Indycars

Eh, we can dream.

Short circuit is suitable, IndyCar & Champ Car has ran at shorter street circuits in the past 10-15 years than the present layout for Surfers (i.e. St. Petersburg, Toronto, Houston (NRG Park), Denver (Pepsi Center), Miami (2003), San Jose) . Just need some curbing changes

Wouldn't be shocked if they tried 2 separate races, one for V8's & one for Indy

There are other tracks in Australia. Why try so hard to go back to Surfers?

Why not? As a street circuit it's one of our best, and street circuits are the way motorsports is heading. I'd be equally happy with Adelaide, Newcastle or Bathurst (which would never happen), but there are plenty of worse options here.

some IndyCar related tidbits from Robin Miller's weekly mailbag:
- Richmond still exploring options for a race date in 2020
- Montreal possibly in play for a race date in 2021
For the full mailbag article - CLICK HERE

as far as non-Surfers options in Australia: I'd think Adelaide, Townsville, Eastern Creek, Sandown & Phillip Island would all be great options in terms of racing product.

Rather not see The Bend or the second circuit at Bathurst, but I'd guess they would also be right up there in the running too. I still think in terms of international race options, Surfers has the best chance but after Rio, Mexico City, Montreal, Calgary (Peterson turned the project over to Green-Savoree) & Buenos Aires.

Also have to remember there's some tracks stateside in the running for a 2020+ date as well (Richmond). With the series only looking at 17 to 20 race weekends a year, not many dates to go around unless one of the present tracks cuts their deal early.

Another sentence from the Mailbag worth highlighting;

Quote:
Here’s my prediction: the Andretti/McLaren team will be Fernando and Marco.

Which presumably would bring Andretti's pure car count up to 5 (as Michael said he could do) plus 2 Harding entries (Steinbrenner funding Herta and O'Ward putting his FILS prize to good use) with Andretti help.

All we need now is Roush-Fenway to partner with a IC team and then we can have the Red Sox v. Yankees rivalry in racing now

Colin Braun used to drive for Roush-Fenway. If he ends up in a third RLL car, does that count?

McLaren could be a Fred / Latifi pairing according to this. Also speculates that McDonalds could be a possible sponsor

Michael Andretti has also said he needs something of a commitment within 'the next week or so', and now Zak Brown has said Carlos Sainz is on their radar.

I can't take this level of teasing.

Autosport engaging in decent journalism for the first time in months and approaching the car count question from a different angle - by asking Dallara directly.

With all these rumors going around it starts to sound like we're going to have 25 - 27 full-timers and possibly bumping in qualifying in some races. Can't wait to see the next season to start!

NO WAY MANNNNN, BUMPING IS AN INDY TRADITION ONLY, YOU DESECRATE THE HOLY TRADITIONS OF THE 500 IF YOU BUMP ELSEWHERE WAAAAHHHHH

Been a long time since they sent anyone home from an Indycar race outside of the Speedway for not qualifying.

I don't know if I like it or not. Indycar is finally, after all these years, headed back in the direction it should've been going. I'd hate to start loosing any momentum because some of the new teams fail to qualify for races simply because the pits aren't big enough.

In one of Marshall Pruett's podcasts a few weeks back, he mentioned that Frye said that they will not be sending any cars home for races outside of the 500.

Apparently Honda are reluctant to supply Alonso with an engine partly because of his comments about there F1 engines & also because of him driving for Toyota in the WEC.

And to think that many of us thought that a deal with this obscure Versus channel, would be another nail in IndyCar's coffin.
