I would like to share your optimism, but considering that the aero kits have been in the post since 2012 and even with 3 years of preparation they failed to test them properly on ovals, I have no confidence that Indycar will make the cars safe at the speeds they want them to reach for next year.

Well, as an optimist, I think they now will either get it right in record speeds or not go for the records if they're not sure of it. They have a year to study what needs to be done for the crash structures and lift effect, when moving backwards. I think they'll get some extra budget for that research to guarantee a safer and faster edition next year after this mess.

This might not be the whole problem but it has to be at least part of it.

They may have been preparing them for 3 years but in indycar "preparing for aero kits" means the team bosses arguing amongst themselves and the series for 2 years, getting any leader who was pushing for them fired, begging for more money to run them, complaining to the media About them, more arguing amongst themselves and then eventually begrudgingly agreeing to run them about 3 weeks before the first test,

I wasn't some bizarre psychic when I posted my worrying prediction, more just someone who knows exactly how These people think.
Or more likely how they think too much about less important stuff and not enough about stuff that matters

I wonder if there's just too much extra surface area with all the bodywork on modern Indycars. Look at the 1996 cars when the speed records were set: they were extremely clean and trim. And the only car that got off the ground that year was due to riding up the back of another (Zampedri at the finish).

I'm willing to believe this didn't happen to The cart cars for 2 reasons.

1. ground effect which meant the car was more likely to want to suck itself back down to the ground than blow over

2, and this the main one Imo, weight. Those champcar were a hell of a lot heavier than irl and indycars that followed. Meant it'd take a much higher speed to get them off the ground, like as you say in 96,

There are always exceptions but yeah it happened a hell of a lot less back then...

The "Security paranoia" will still end up with all motorsports.
