Yes watch the Belgian Grand Prix coming up!

I am watching it too, but you should check that onboard with jpm at spa 2004, and compare that to this era of F1 and you can see how slow and bad this era is, jeez, today's driver doesn't even sweat.

Didn't watch them in the after quali press conference then.

While the finish was exciting i am really not fond of that irl style of pack racing.

Your just watching & waiting for the big wreck you hope wont happen.

Totally agree, although at the same time I love it, but when they went 4 wide I yelled out "NOOOOOO", the risks are too high imo

Sure but I recommend talking about this in the Remeber When thread in the f1 sub forum

I would say you were forgetting a big reason they tried to get away from pack racing, but the thread about it got bumped today so I have no idea what tell you now.

We can agree that Pagenaud drove with the championship in his mind those last laps, very smart.

a 4-wide in Texas could give the same result that Kenny Brack had in 2003

they touched some times on the final restart and were very lucky not to crash

That wasn't a pack race, they could make passes and get loose and lift etc.. a "pack race" is everyone is flat, glued to the track, point and steer. 2015 Fontana and here were amazing displays of driving, just like Michigan and Fontana with the Hanford Device.

Ultimately we don't decide how they race, the series and drivers do.

If someone gets fenced, so be it. Freak accidents happen and racing is dangerous.

It's not a "freak accident" if everyone is expecting it.

Then they should not get in the car.

I've got no issue with them racing wheel to wheel at high speed; Its just the style of pack racing we saw at times tonight that makes me really nervous because we've been there before in the IRL days & eventually that sort of racing with this sort of car tends to end badly.

Fontana last year was close to the limit of what I think should be seen as acceptable racing for these cars on that sort of track, Tonight at times I think it went beyond the limit & it's something I hope we don't go back to seeing regularly.

There's a difference between inherent danger and unnecessry danger. Those last few stints were the latter.

I'm not blaming anyone for it, because IndyCar obviously had a bit of safety in mind by having Firestone bring a tire that degrades. I don't think they could have expected those insane short stints. My only point is that it was getting out of hand and I think they were lucky not to hurt someone.

But it's not like IndyCar or Firestone made Pagenaud dive to the bottom or Rahal swing to the wall and stick em in there 4 wide.. Those guys either got lucky, or are amazing wheelmen. I choose to believe the latter.

Of course they're good drivers, but that's not the point being discussed.

That was one of the wildest, scariest 20 laps I ever saw. Banging wheels at 215mph 4 wide... Ooof.

Maybe those bumper pods and closed in wheel guards actually work.

The rear flaps seem to work. Dixon getting turned around at the fastest part of the track and it never hinted at lifting.

Drivers aren't bitching. Power just kept his mouth shut and clearly he wasn't impressed (not that I blame him.)

I don't know. The short stints and different tire life's added to the madness.

But... Man oh man, that was a helluva show.

That was amazing. Great CLEAN racing, topped off by a win by my Team Steak and Shake champion! Go Graham!

At least those cars have some extra protection for wheel-to-wheel contact. I'm ok with one race having this amount of danger after a 20 lap to go restart like this one. Way different than Fontana.

Still, funny how those rocket on wheels that Cart had looked much safer than these standards. Motorsport safety has evolved everywhere except Indycar who still kept pushing for the stupidly retarded kind of racing.

At least this time it looked like the drivers were able to do way more than those IRL races. There they just stayed side-by-side for 1000 laps, and raced the same on all tracks.

About the "uh, so don't get in the car". Well, this is Indycar, is a motorsport series. Maybe we should start a Kamikaze 500 for next year, where only drivers with death pulse and no families can go and drive. Not the ones who sacrificed their childhood, near went bankrupt and all just to now be into this death trap.

Edit: 5000 posts!!! What a post to get that.

People have short memories, wasn't it a piece of debris off a single car crash while the cars were running nose to tail that caused the last death in an Indycar rather than OMG kill a kitten pack racing?

The drivers have far more input nowdays than they used to, they can always park it if they don't like it. This style of pack racing is better than it was, at least there is tyre fall off that splits things up.

I guess this race was the best kind of show Indycar could ask for. Spectacular to say the least.

I don't really care for the kind of sprint racing as it was the last 50 laps due to the cautions, and I don't like IRL-style pack racing, which this wasn't. I would've liked though to see Carpenter chasing down Hinch and have those two fight it out. But this was definitely entertaining. As for the danger, well, it's racing. I don't think this package can be improved in any way. The best car could drive away from the pack and so on.
