450 miles apart from each other though.

I must admit it seemed strange to schedule the Indycar for the Saturday, now it's understandable.

I'm not sure I understand the fuss about pack racing, these are completely different cars to those used at Vegas and it's a lot harder for them to trip over each other than the old car. Eventually the series is going to have to dip their toes into adding downforce on ovals to improve the racing because the spread out car every hundred yards after 3 laps racing now is not bringing in the crowds, they might as well do it somewhere like here considering it's about twice the width as every other Oval and see how it goes, everybody seems convinced it's going to end in disaster but they won't know until they try.

Or raise the power to Cart standarts... ;)

I gave up on oval racing in Indycar. The series is scared after Dan's death and never more so after Indy this year.

You might be right here, times are changing with oval racing. Racing an open-wheeler with open cockpit at 230mph is considered too dangerous almost as a rule. Everyone reacted very passionately on what happened at Indy this year. The bottom line was that safety is a big concern and risks should be minimized.
Times have changed so much that serious accidents are always as well analyzed like the airplane crashes, no casualties are accepted. Which is good, no one wants to see Vegas happening all over again. But when we analyze the circumstances at Vegas, we start to take a closer look on what we see happening on other ovals. We see what was wrong at Las Vegas and with the leasons learned, we try to avoid it repeating. That's why we had an "over correction" at Indy this year. Yes, we saw cars go airbourne, yes, we've seen that happen before Vegas, but now we wanted to avoid it to happen again. Flips are not acceptable anymore, but racing at these speeds makes things complicated. We want fast, but we want safe. We want action, but we don't want to see the dark side of it. It's difficult to find the correct formula for this.

Let's hope we'll see a great race today.

Open wheelers shouldn't pack race.

Making the turns harder, i.e slower, will make everything better. The racing, the safety, the challenge.

In short: MORE POWER, LESS DOWNFORCE!

Agree, but ATM they are quite far from achieving that goal anytime soon....

I know, just pointing out that if it's up to the manufacturers it will only get worse, downforce wise.

Airborne crashes are a concern, because the risk of hitting your head is very high. Hinchcliffe's crash was the worst one at Indy this year but nobody was reacting passionate over that accident although the driver was injured. It's just more scary to see cars lift and see them fly towards a grandstand (or into pitlane, how has that not happened yet at Indy with that low pitwall). As long as they can keep the cars on the ground, racing at 230 mph shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure, I wonder how much aero they will add, and when it will start to slow down too much on the straight. And here at Fontana, I doubt there would be pack racing for too long with this surface at this time of the day.....

How long until the race actually starts? This is going to be the first non-Indy oval race I've watched in friggin ages as it's on at a reasonable time for once

Apart from the safety aspect another reason i'm not keen on seeing pack racing is that it's actually quite boring to watch after a while. When they all get side by side & there all running flat out you start getting to the point where nothing's happening because there all just stuck side by side unable to pass each other.

I think since 2012 we have had some very good races on the ovals, The racing is still close & you still see some side by side racing but now you actually see some some passes because the car behind can draft upto the car ahead & not get stuck side by side because the slingshot passes are back.

Its not perfect & i've said before that i'm not totally sold on how tyre wear was playing such a big role last year, But it was better at Texas & I think the 2nd half of that race was very good. Watching some of the practice sessions this weekend it looks like its going to be even better this weekend.
