The heli took long enough to take off. I would think if it was life threatening that thing would've been gone already. Hope the tweet about him being alert is correct.

Apparently it was 40 minutes from crash to helicopter take-off.

If his injuries are not life threatening and he's awake and alert, it would make sense to stabilize him for helicopter ride if there's no rush.

You are always stabilised one way or another, because they cannot work on you in the helicopter.
