He’s found a niche for himself in FE, one of the most consistent drivers in the series. That’s about it. In F3 he was average, in GP2/FR3.5 just a little better than average. Has never shown to be F1 standard. And let’s remember he was Mercedes test driver at one point, so they had a chance to see what he’s got.

Hmm, I tend to take the other perspective on it - he's been very quick and consistent in everything he's ever driven, and he seems to be quite well-regarded in the industry, much like Adam Carroll. Mercedes gave him a go when they had Rosberg and Schumacher in their main team and were pushing Di Resta in at Force India. It was nearly a decade ago when the landscape with young drivers was very different, and we all know that Mercedes now have a pretty terrible record of managing their juniors. So I don't think we can read too much into that

I suspect that if we were living in less conservative times in F1, I think he'd have had a few races to show what he could do. But he's 32, doesn't carry much sponsorship and isn't in a gold-plated young driver scheme so he has no chance. But I should probably save my bitterness about that for an F1 thread :p

It does prove there's more to the motorsport world than F1 and we need series like Formula E around to give drivers another destination so their careers aren't seen as over if they don't make it into one series, no matter how prestigious.

I can’t agree, I’ve never seen anything special with him. His 3-year stint in F3 was unremarkable considering the equipment he had. Which was disappointing after his FBMW achievements. In GP2 and FR3.5 he only came good after he’d been at that level for multiple years.

But as @

says, this is why there is more to Motorsport than F1. I’m no fan but he’s having success at this level, all credit to him.

Another great Formula E race :flag:

Just watched it and it was a very good race. Nice track layout.

BUT

Motor racing needs to do away with all of the micro-management. Why are people being penalised for "using too much energy"? Whatever happened to using the full capabilities of the car? The batteries have a certain capacity just like a fuel tank, so that should be the limit. Same goes for fuel flow limits. And that new rule about the brakes utterly bananas. What are they going to do next? Start limiting the number of gear changes per lap? I hate how this sport is being run into the ground by imbeciles.

A battery can be cooked if you overvolt it so it could be a safety regulation
IE Battery is safe to deliver power level X but if you over clock that to higher level Y, the damn thing might blow up

I dunno, this whole thing is in its infancy compared to combustion engines so it's no wonder teams are still stumbling around making mistakes (or deliberately creating new avenues to circumvent the rules) and the governing body has to get hard on them to stop everyone following the same path

I could see a battery blowing if it was recharged too much but wouldn't it just go flat if you tried to take too much charge out? To me it feels like a rule that's been put in place by an organiser that feels like it has to have control over everything.

The brake rule was put in place following a request from the chassis manufacturer Spark. Not sure the specific details why.

perhaps they're afraid to see something like this happen

I wonder how that marshall didn't got injured

about penalties, drivers are damn sure pissed off

Probably because they'll explode like others have said. Cells have a c rating which is essentially the max amount of power they can deliver, for example I have a 4 cell, 45c 3500 mAh battery charging next to me, that means the maximum it can deliver is 3500x45=15750mA or in simple terms, 157.5 Amps.

Drawing say 165 Amps from it for even a short period will likely result in a nice fireworks display (which is why my battery is charging inside a fire and bomb proof box as overcharging them can make them go bang too).

When you strip back all the bullshit, the batteries in the Formula E car are essentially Panasonic 18650 cells, the same that are in Tesla cars and if you can get them, drones and of course, the same battery technology in practically every mobile phone on the planet.

If you know how dangerous your phone was, you'd never let it near your body let alone carry it in your pocked next to your balls.

I've lost count the number of batteries I've puffed drawing too much from them, they go up well.

Well, I'll admit that I was wrong about batteries but there are still a lot of rules in racing that don't need to exist.

No safety car needed there. Good old Charlie, just fire, smoke fluids and oh yeah, marshals on track! :whistling:

Wasnt there also a video (which I've searched for to no avail) of when kers first came in of a team (iirc a Williams) coming into the pits in testing and its pit crew being electrocuted to the point they all hit the deck? You can never be too careful with these things imo

this one?

I guess they are imposing limits on the formula E cars because their batteries were catching fire randomly, like when you plug your phone battery right into a power source

Yes that's the one. I'd misremembered it as being the entire crew for some reason. But that was the sort of thing people were scaremongering would happen at every pit stop when KERS came in lol

Completely forgotten about that. I do remember him being treated pretty poorly by Boullier that year.

He had great angle out of the final chicane on Imola with the early GP2 cars. Some say he's still drifting....
