Also unlike F1 that races in the middle of no-where and wonders why no-one shows up, Formula E races right in the city centre so will get a lot more curious first time fans, at least for the first race.

There will probably be 100's or 1000's of Saudi Arabians who will attend who have never seen a motorsport event live, who cares if the organisers are paying overs for hosting rights?

100 or 1000 sounds about right if the attendance is similar to the Race of Champions held earlier this year. Nothing wrong with money alone but this is about politics too.

Saudi Arabia has started to become a very progressive nation, unlike others in the Middle East, as your post about female drivers states.

"Very". So they'll use FE as a PR tool coinciding with the recent legal change allowing women to drive (wow, so progressive). You might need to back to 80s Olympics to see as direct state-propaganda being channelled via sports.

It's Formula E, not Formula 1, major cities aren't exactly climbing over each other for hosting rights, so its inevitable that smaller major cities will get races.

There was a one failure (Montreal) but other than that there in fact seems to be a lot of cities that are lining up?

Hyperboost!

https://katyfairman.com/2018/05/21/deta ... formula-e/

Quote:
The strategy, which will see the cars having to drive off the racing line in order to collect a ‘boost’ and then re-join the racing line, is the same “Mario Bros” idea that CEO of Formula E Alejandro Agag told Autosport about last month, “like when they get the little star and go faster,” he added.

It is understood that the boost available to drivers will see a 12.5% increase in power, with a working title of ‘hyperboost’ being used to describe the idea.

The driver will decide the lap they commit to ‘hyperboost’ which will solely inform the FIA and ensure it will be a safe option.

So like a push-to-pass, minus the choice where to use it, plus a stupid name and plus a safety concern.

Looks like FE wants to outbid NASCAR for stupidity. I wonder how long this lasts until we have a major wreck... like every weekend :yuk:

So, the hype(r)boost is essentially a push-to-pass system minus the choice where to use it.

Quote:
New power modes

In a world first for motorsport, drivers will be able to access a higher power mode in addition to FANBOOST by passing through an activation zone marked out and visible on the circuit for fans at the track and those watching on TV. When a driver passes through the activation zone, they will be able to access 225kW of power - as opposed to the standard 200kW available during the race. Signalling the power hike is the job of the new illuminated FIA halo head protection device, which will show different colours for each of the two power modes. The power mode will only be accessible for a given time depending on each track, along with the number of times a driver can access it.

Another change... might have the opposite results...

Quote:
Timed races

No more lap limits - we're moving to timed races. With each round running to a strict limit of 45-minutes plus one lap to reach the chequered flag, we're mixing things up to make it even more interesting. Well, what did you expect?

Somebody on Facebook asked ironically 'What next, random banana peels on the track!?' and I thought yeah, why not. People want to be entertained.

It remains to be seen if there is a separate "hyperboost" lane they need to take on the straight or if it is really just a DRS-like zone.

First one sounds stupid and dangerous.

Season was cool. Drivers are becoming relentless, and a lot of close races and finishes.

This series has grown on me a lot. I honestly can't wait to see the whole paddock again at Paris next year. I've been to my first F1 GP too this season but all around, the Formula E pitwalk is probably my motorsports highlight of the year so far.
