I have found it difficult to remain interested in FE.
It looks like racing under VSC speeds.

Weirdly, I think they look even slower here because they're just using the normal F1 camera angles in most parts of the circuit.

That power usage overlay is pretty cool.

Who the fuck voted the car that already has a second a lap domination over the entire field as worthy for a fan boost?

looks like you couldn't even use fan boost there as you can't go through 3rd gear

Damn close finish, if only Di Grassi could've pulled that off :8:

Good race.

yeah, lovely procession with 0 overtakes. At least you have consistency and coherence when rating F1 and FE :whistling:

quite surprising to see you say that. The same sort of surprise when you bashed DRS. What happened to you? :p

This series won't last long, it's pathetically slow and gimmicky. Almost nobody cares about it anymore.

I don't think I could disagree with you more if I tried. I sense (and hope) that the auto manufacturers use FE as a test bed for improving their electric technology. Concievably, the manufacturers could use it as a way to test more powerful electric units, quicker recharging, longer range, and the like. I hope the FIA and manufacturers see it the same way. The technology needed to produce an all-electric car with the same power and range as a standard gasoline-powered road car at the same price, and the technology needed to recharge a battery in as little time as you need to fill up your car could come from FE. For that reason, the series will last longer than you think.

Potentially, the next great motorsports arms race could be in this series. I hope I'm right.

From the pure entertainment POV, people don't care about FE. Just a few people does, the masses didn't buy it.

The manufacturers might be interested in the marketing aspect of it but some believe that other technologies such as fuel cells, hydrogen and etc will soon make eletric vehicles obsolete. Besises, even if those things never materialize, battery tech may never evolve much more than what we get now.

If anything, FE is a very poor display of the technology. The energy lasts very little(the race is a gimmicky, very short, sprint one and they still need to swap cars which is quite ridiculous and a negative marketing of the whole thing) and that with very little power being deployed.

It will be interesting to see if in 10 years time this series still exists. The tv ratings are very underwhelming to say the least.

I like FE. I hope it sticks around for many years. The Monaco race was always going to be blah with the track layout that they run. I thought the Mexico round was one of the better races in any series so far this season.

Given the heavy ratings decline of most motorsports in general, I think you can speculate that about *many* motorsports series. :p

Right now, the big push in automobile technology is for both electrification and self-driving. Formula E might survive fine if manufacturers see the format as a good way to either experiment or run exhibitions along those lines. I don't know if it will ever be "main event" caliber, but it may not need to be. I think it's entertaining enough as it is.

That Roborace concept, if it actually takes off, might even be good to attract an entirely different type of audience if they angled it right (tech geek types). But instead of showing the races on a TV network, I'd personally stream the races over Twitch or Youtube. :p

Thank you for this post, for finally cementing your reputation here (if it wasn't already so ; ) )

Formula E is the future mannnn. It's beating F1 at its own game on social media (with a 3 year head start in that regard), races right in the hearts of cities so is able to grab a more mainstream audience than other motorsport series, and is on Free to air television, at least here in England.
F1 meanwhile trades on elitism, its fans are furious with it for not having engines from the last decade and is rapidly hiding itself behind pay TV paywalls, turning off even the hardcore fans.

Manufacturers are clamoring to jump aboard Formula E, meanwhile aside from the whole Audi hoax, we haven't heard of anyone likely to join the F1 ranks in a good long while.

Formula E is not afraid to bring new concepts to motorsport and it is paying off.
As long as it remains a testbed for the future of motorsport that happens to take place in front of crowds in the city streets, it'll have a bright future.
Manufacturers have to test these things anyway, it's the way the industry is going, better to do it and get PR value from it in something like Formula E than just pound around a test track anonymously.
