Watching a program on the Super Touring era on ITV4 right now - good stuff!

It was the episode I was looking forward the most. Very interesting story about Cleland "stalling" at the Silverstone finale in 1989 so he can stay of trouble and win his class. As he heard stories that the BMWs are out to get him. No Birmingham Superprix footage boooo. Guess BBC had the rights to the footage at then.

I thought Cleland admitted intentionally hanging back at the 1989 finale in the 1989 season review. Good ploy.

Cleland, great driver but my god the man can talk!

A shame he stopped doing the WTCC commentary, we'd be rolling around in more classic quotes than ever if he'd continued.

I'm not sure I agree with everything he said (his account of the 92 finale is slightly biased at best...it was a racing accident) but hey, he's entertaining. No wonder he got a lot more of the screen time compared to the slightly more boring Rouse and Soper, etc.

Still, I think they all agreed that the biggest BTCC legend of all was Murray.

And quite right too!

(I've also never heard David Addison's commentary on the Mansell race at Donington or Ben Edwards on his slightly more successful race later on, was this for Eurosport?

David Addison did the commentary for the VHS review of the 1993 TOCA shoot out, which I uploaded to RU / RFM a few years back. Murray and Cleland did the BBC commentary for the race (Grandstand highlights a few weeks later) which was much better but long lost from my collection.

Probably don't need to rehash this discussion for the umpteenth time, but if that was a racing accident then so is everything Jacques Villeneuve has ever done. Soper gives way to his teammate then attempts to block Cleland onto the grass at Brooklands, Cleland pulls ahead anyway so Soper himself drives onto the grass and t-bones Cleland at Luffield hard enough to knock a corner off his car. That was the dirtiest of dirty driving, and a prime reason people have described btcc as beater racing in the past.

Cleland and Vauxhall showed great dignity and sportsmanship following the 1992 season finale. These days drivers and teams would have protested that result to the maximum, but 21 years ago both team and driver accepted what happened and moved on without even battering an eyelid (then won the TOCA Shoot Out a few weeks later). A lot of modern day teams and drivers (and championship organisers) can learn from that.

I still have the complete Grandstand coverage of the Donington race in 1998 on VHS somewhere, just need to find some method of putting it onto youtube ideally. Must say I much prefer the original commentary of the event.

What makes me laugh about the 92 finale is the crowd noise they add onto the accident.

Like balls did they have any microphones in the crowd so that means they realised it was a huge moment and dubbed on oohs and aaahs afterwards :p

I've been after that for years. I have the full footage for race 1 but not race 2 (grrr....). If you need help uploading I can probably make a helpful suggestion. Have you converted it yet or is it still on VHS?

But it is a first to see the footage with subtitles for me. I am still learning with access to motorsport with subtitles!

Still on VHS at the minute, I'll see if I can dig it out today.

Apologies if I came across as insensitive Bigears, I'd forgotten about this even though I've known you for years.

Oh no, it is perfectly fine. It is not like every day a deaf guy posts in a motorsport forum!

Watched the first 2 episodes of the BTCC Legends series. The first episode was bloody boring if I'm honest. Second one was better, although not quiet what I expected I guess. Overwhelming impression from it is that Soper was an asshole, and hasn't changed a bit. He's just a smug c**t.

Other than Jason Plato, I'm yet to meet any BTCC driver with a worse reputation for dealing with fans. The sense of entitlement that always seemed to be radiating from that guy was ridiculous!

Love the stories from behind the scenes and what it was like which you got from both episodes. Looking forward to the next one. Agree on the Soper part which proves the racer he was. And smug.
