Definitely not over-policing of the sport

(Good racing today btw. Been a brilliant season)

If you think that’s bad you should look at what happened to Tim Harvey in 1991.

I was at Silverstone today. They've started checking bags at the gate but only certain types. There was a woman in front of me who put her handbag down, only to be told by the guy that it didn't need to be checked. Amazing security.

The racing was close and hard fought all day. The two F4 races were very good as the cars really suit faster, flowing circuits. It would be an excellent championship if it had more cars on the grid (come back, Carlin!).

The Porsches were definitely aided by the simplicity of the layout. There was a great battle in race 1 involving Dan Harper and only one car was lapped in race 2. The lapped car was, unsurprisingly, Fraser Robertson who spun off 3-4 times during the day and nearly caused an accident on one of his rejoins. I'll never understand why people like him are allowed to have racing licences, let alone race cars of this level of performance.

Only the one Junior race, which Foster ran away with, but it was pretty frantic behind him as usual.

The GT4s were more action packed than usual, but the series has always been hit and miss. An exciting lead battle and a nice photo finish for third in the first race of the day.

The Clios put on a typical Silverstone slip streamer. Quite how the field missed a spinning Zelos on lap 1 I'll never know, and there was a near-flip on the next lap. Clio's gonna Clio, I guess. An impressive double victory for Burns and it's nice to see Rivett at the top of the standings again, the master that he is.

The touring car races were by far the closest competitions all day, as you'd expect. Even at this late stage the season is still producing new winners, but there wasn't a great deal of change in the championship situation. Turkington and Ingram both showed their class again today, picking up a good haul of points. There are a couple of incidents I'm unsure about: I didn't see how Jelley went around in race 3 but it looked like Jackson was an innocent victim with nowhere to go. And I only caught a brief glimpse of a replay of the Pidgley incident. Was it contact with one of his teammates that sent him off? It's quite easy to miss things when you can see so much of the track and there's always something happening!

They moved the podium truck to the main straight for the final podium of the day, which is always a pleasant surprise. They should do this more often, it only adds to the openness and value for money that the BTCC provides.

I did have the misfortune, as usual, to be sat near a moron (I was in a public place after all). A man who, by his own admission, had been attending races for 20 years yet didn't know what a black & white flag was for. He did eventually figure it out but was then confused as to what offence the many drivers who were shown it may have committed. Hmm, what's that thing that gets talked about during every event around the world these days? People like him baffle me.

I would assume, due to the severity of the penalty, that this was an engine-related infringement. Dan Welch was penalised by the same amount a few years ago for an engine issue. Definitely something TOCA don't want people messing around with.

The thread was a bit empty today. Were people prioritising the global shitfest over racing again? When will they learn?

This infestation of bag checking is really becoming tiresome, and now it's crept into Motorsport?

The laughability of it all as you say is the checks are never done properly, if you're gonna bag check, do every bag, otherwise don't bother, these must be the same people who run security at theme parks and assume terrorists are not clued up enough to sneak stuff in in small quantities or fly it in by drone, or not to bother checking the staff entrance, or what happened today, calling police on someone because they had a battery bank to charge their phone and security thought it was a bomb.

Oh gawd, if they bag check at race tracks I'm never going back.

Yeah, if those people had any intelligence they'd have a real job.

I usually just ignore them, had one the other week shout at me "I need to check your bag", I said you haven't known me long enough to get to second base so I'll pass.

His colleagues collapsed into laughter but the guy had no clue, repeated what he'd said so I said "do I look like I'm hiding a fucking handbag down my trousers", he still looked confused and I just walked off.

I think this was just a Sliverstone thing though. They also limit the number of people who can participate in the pit lane walkabout due to "health & safety", despite having the largest pit lane in the country. Although considering how long it took to get through the gate today, I doubt many people would have had the opportunity anyway.

theme parks have had bag checks for almost two years now, since the week after the Westminster bridge thing. We learnt pretty quickly to leave the bags in the car and pop out half way through the day to go get the food as it was quicker (if you didn't have a bag you just walked passed the security), but they changed it this year and everybody must go through the metal bridges (at Thorpe) regardless of whether you have a bag or not.

At its worst, people who were arriving at 9am, we're not getting into the park until 1pm due to the stupid checks. All the London midway attractions have had bag checks for as long as I can remember, the eye since it opened, even winter wonderland in Hyde park has bag checks and I got refused entry at my local McDonald's for refusing to take my cap off a few weeks ago.

This 'give up your privacy/freedom for your security' is infesting everyday life like a cancer.

Oh, I know it happens elsewhere. I meant it's just Silverstone in terms of race tracks. I've been to Donington, Thruxton & Rockingham this year and there were no checks.

Oh right I get you, it might not be long though, these "security consultants' seem to be doing a great job of selling companies bucket loads of fear porn.

To answer my own query:
Irritating thing is that ITV caught it as well as they showed the collision in the closing highlights, just didn't show it in the race or post race coverage.

The only frustrating thing about such a large grid is ITV won't show a crash if it doesn't involve their self-created "star" drivers

As someone who followed Ant Wareton-Eales from the oval scene, it was frustrating how little coverage he got last year even though he occasionally put in a couple of decent runs.
I think as a result, he couldn't find sponsorship and is off dominating the BMW Mini Challenge instead.

So yeah, even if there's a huge barrell roll for the driver in 19th place, we'll be lucky to see it.
(Still waiting on Jade Edwards Clio roll footage, guys :P )
