This is a bit of a surprise. Tander has been dropped by Walkinshaw, to be replaced by Scott Pye. I'd say either they can't afford to keep both Tander and Courtney, or they've decided to bring in some new blood:

REC definitely has to play a part in it

Not sure what you were aiming at there, but I noticed further down in the article that this is supposed to be part of some kind of plan to encourage Dunlop Series teams to run wildcards in other events. I wonder if they're trying to increase (or maintain?) the number of cars competing in the series in general, without having to sell of the dormant RECs, which from what I understand would need to be agreed to by all the other REC holders and effectively end up reducing the value of their contracts. Of course that's just unbased speculation, but I can't think of any other reason off the top of my head why they would be making a plan for that.

I must clear it up, its the REC's that are causing the low car numbers at Bathurst in recent years. They should allow the Dunlop Series cars to run one-offs. Its the biggest race of the year, you'd expect there to be an effort to get more cars in the race.

Pye and Courtney is a great pairing.

Besides, additional cars would ruin the racing. Imagine how many safety cars would happen if you allowed 30 additional cashed up businessmen and teenagers who couldn't drive a nail into wood on the mountain? They have to run outdated equipment which would inherently be slower anyway, they'd need the miracle of all miracles to even finish in the top 10 or even on the lead lap.

I doubt they'd allow that many cars in, and I'm not sure that even if they did that they would get that many anyway, the Dunlop Series doesn't seem to get more than 25 or so cars now and I doubt all of them would be able to pull together the funds to run the 1000 (and several of them are run by main game teams which have enough on their plate to begin with). Anyway like you said having full 55 car grids comprised of nothing but Supercars like they did in the 90s again would be moronic.

I also don't think bringing in more cars would necessarily improve the racing as such, and most of the better drivers in the lower categories already have enduro rides anyway. But I don't see any problem with having more cars as long there is a sensible limit on the amount of cars that can compete (I'd say 40, at the absolute maximum), on how far off the pace you can be, and on how little prior experience you can have to compete in the race (in other words, no David Thextons or any of the other multitudes of hopelessly uncompetive privateers who ran back in the day and are now completely forgotten). When they first limited the amount of cars that could to start to about that number back in the early 2000s I don't think there were any major issues with slow cars causing accidents and getting in the way, and I can't see how it would be all that much different today.

These days most of the cars in the Dunlop Series wouldn't be too far off the main game cars anyway (I'm pretty certain the current Supercar race lap record at Bathurst was actually set by Dumbrell driving in the Dunlop 250), and even if they wouldn't set the world on fire I think there are enough competent drivers in Australia to have 30-35 cars running in the 1000. Whether or not that could actually happen in this day and age is another thing.

Pretty sure somewhere about 1999-2001 there were 51 or 55 cars competing. I remember the last couple of guys were 14 seconds a lap off the pace in qualifying.

55 qualified for 1999 and 2000

2001 was the first year they started limiting entries, to get an entry you had to, IIRC, have entered at least a round or two of the DVS, which lowered the entry to around 40

Not taking anything away from it, I still like it. If you're going to copy from someone, make sure they're/its the best.

This was my immediate thought as well.

It's pretty clear they wanted to make Rush but didn't quite have the story for Rush, or 5% of the budget. The wife beating and road safety stuff felt especially preachy and tacked on.

Oh I think they were right to include it, but all the scenes of his workmates having a go at him/punching him for it were a bit rich. Back then guys just didn't talk about that sort of thing.

Anyone watch the Peter Brock made-for-TV movie?

It has copped a lot of shit for being historically inaccurate (who really cares) but it was plain boring for the most part. Only real interesting part was the polariser stuff. 3 hours of my life I won't get back.

I watched the first part and didn't really like it, but that's largely because it was a low-budget soap opera.

The racing scenes didn't really save it either IMO, mostly because they included the recreations where the actors driving at about 20 kilometres an hour while making faces. Also on the actual footage they felt the need to include fake sound effects like it was some kind of 1950s race review.

And while you may not care about the historical inaccuracies, in the process of changing some of the story for dramatic purposes they actually managed to make the 1973 race seem less dramatic, by ignoring Brock's 50-something year old co-driver having to push the car up the pit-lane all by himself after it ran out of fuel.

Surely Steve Irwin is next. They'll probably get the same guy who looked nothing like Brock to play him.

Well it's not every day a movie is made about something to do with Australian motorsport. In fact it may well be the first one that's ever been made. It's not like I had high expectations, so I wasn't that disappointed.
