The Midnight Sun Race returns, after 50 years. It used to be held on Skellefteå's airport in the 50's and 60's, and now a new permanent facility is being built in Skellefteå, and STCC has made a 10-year commitment to host a race there, starting in 2019.

The track will be northern Europe's longest, at 4120 meters. It doesn't say whether there will be racing at actually midnight, but a primetime event the weekend before midsummer would be pretty cool, and a great opportunity for STCC. There is 24 hour sunlight up there that time of year, so it'll be a very unique event! A friend of mine has a cabin in the woods just 4 or 5 kilometers from there, I guess I'll have to go then!

Post subject:  Re: STCC - 2018 season

No streams. Coverage looked the same as last year, but on a rubbish network.

Pretty good racing nontheless. Neither Dahlgren or Kristoffersson won a race, but the underdogs Haglöf and Wernersson did. Looks like the quality of the field is higher than last year! Shame just that 20 out of 21 cars are VW's, Seats or Audis...

Wildcard at Anderstorp and on 1 or 2 other races, Estonian driver Andre Kiil: https://www.touringcartimes.com/2018/06 ... nderstorp/

Never heard of, but nice with a little bit of international flavour in STCC.

So was at Karlskoga for Kanonloppet, a weekend that went from tragic, to feel-good, to controversial.

On Saturday, a marshall was killed in an accident during the GT support qualifying session. I believe this was the first fatality in Swedish circuit racing since Ronnie Peterson. So the feeling in the paddock on Sunday was a bit gloomy. But the racing turned out great, and there was a nice tribute to the deceased marshall as well. And then Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky's maiden win (also first female winner in STCC's history) became a wonderful feel-good story for the weekend.

However, then politics reared it's ugly head. The entire PWR team (Åhlin-Kottulinsky, race 1 winner Daniel Haglöf, championship leader Robert Dalhgren and Philip Morin) was excluded from race 1 as race 2 was going on, and then Mikaela was stripped of her historic win a couple of hours later. Sounds like the exclusion is due to some technicalities over paperwork more than the actual exhaust system they have been using. It's sad that this protest hasn't been lodged earlier in the year, but that the team that protested waited until this pivotal point in the championship to voice their concerns.

Post subject:  Re: STCC - 2018 season

Kristoffersson dominated in Norway, but the PWR Seats got their Karlskoga results back, so it is Dahlgren leading with the final round at Mantorp Park coming up this weekend. With the Karlskoga results reinstated, it is now confirmed that Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky is the first woman to win in the STCC.

Code:
Robert Dahlgren
Sweden, PWR Racing

167 pts

Johan Kristoffersson
Sweden, Kristoffersson Motorsport

160 pts

Daniel Haglöf
Sweden, PWR Racing

146 pts

Andreas Wernersson
Sweden, Lestrup Racing Team

130 pts

Philip Morin
Sweden, PWR Racing

110 pts

So it's a real battle royale for the championship with a lot of bad blood between PWR Racing and the VW teams. Ironically enough, it is not PWR's closest competition, Kristoffersson Motorsport, that have been upset with them, but West Coast Racing, who are sitting in 6th with Fredrik Ekblom, and has been nowhere near PWR or KMS this season.

I finally got around to watching the season today. It was nice to see Mikaela win, she's improved quite a bit since last year. It was a bit more competitive in 2018 as well but I suppose reverse grids helped. Kristoffersson won the title after Dahlgren retired in the last race, although he'd probably have won it anyway. And what a mess Exhaust gate was.

2019 STCC calendar
May 03-04 – Knutstorp
June 01-02 – Anderstorp
June 14-15 – Skellefteå
July 13-14 – Falkenberg
August 17-18 – Gelleråsen Arena
September 07-08 – Jyllandsringen
October 04-05 – Mantorp Park

STCC returns to Denmark in 2019. Finland in 2017 was a flop, Norway in 2018 didn't seem to go around much better. Hope at least the Danish race can become a staple. 3rd time they are trying to establish a Danish round in the championship.
