There's a tyre test going on today, as they will be using a new construction for them this year. Slade went fastest in the early part of the day. LDM has and will be running Matt Chahda and Aaren Russell today.

The redress rule has been abolished for this season. There's also been changes to the driving standards observer role, it's been split into three and Craig Baird will be filling one of the roles.

Simona de Silvestro has had to apply for a superlicense dispensation. Yes, you read that correctly.

Glad they got rid of the redress rule.

Not a fan of this Superlicense system that CAMS have currently. I understand why they put it in place, but it's pretty stupid when a world class driver that has started several Indianapolis 500's & tested for a Formula 1 team had to get dispensation.

Todd Hazlewood and Matt Stone Racing look set to be the next to join the wildcard brigade, which might include running Bathurst if he can't get a drive with a maingame team. I quite like Todd so I am pleased to see this.

Red Bull HRT have sensibly made some minor changes to their livery judging by this.

A new track outside Newcastle is about to be built.

Construction of a brand new multi-million dollar permanent motor racing complex near Newcastle is set to begin next month.

Circuit Italia is the brainchild of Newcastle businessman and motorsport enthusiast Matthew Higgins, who intends to build a 2.9km track at Port Stephens, situated 35 minutes north of Newcastle, New South Wales.

Built to FIA Grade 2 specifications, the 14 corner circuit, which will feature 40 metres of elevation change, will be eligible to host all motor racing categories except Formula 1.

Originally tabled in 2013, the project has received local council approval and is set to award a construction contract this month, with the building process scheduled to begin in April.

It is hoped the privately funded venue, which is named after the Italia Road it is constructed on, will be ready to host competitive motorsport early next year.

Circuit Italia is the latest new circuit project to begin construction in Australia, following in the footsteps of The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia.

Circuit staff hope the venue will capitalise on a catchment area that includes 10,000 CAMS license holders and a likely increase in motorsport interest, created by the new Coates Hire Newcastle 500 Supercars season finale.

Race events are yet to be secured although Higgins met with Supercars officials in 2015 to discuss his plans for the circuit.

It looks like it could be an interesting track to drive, presuming it does get built. I suspect it will get a Supercars sprint round if that happens. One has to wonder about the street race in that case as well.
