Of all the safety talk, I think there is too big a deal about no catch fencing. Really the fencing is around to protect the spectators. If a car is in a situation where it can get out of the track, it may roll but it is going to be in a field basically.

So what is worse, the car going over a wall in an area with no spectators (the wildlife may need to run) and flip in a field or a car getting up into a catch fence, which will tear the car apart, and then throw it flipping back onto the track to possibly be hit by other cars?

I'll take a trip into the woods any day.

Quite frankly of all the safety innovations, I think catch fences need to be the next thing that the design is updated. They are absolutely needed, obviously, to protect fans but their current design definitely results in some major damage to the cars. Think back to Geoff Bodines crash at Daytona, the fence ripped that truck apart and in a similar case that fence could have ripped into the driver, not good for your health...

I think those bushes along the straight are no worse than catchfencing. As long as there aren't any solid trees just over the other side of the barrier, or a big drop! They actually do a good job of slowing down a flying car without tearing it to pieces.

The tunnel turn and start finish straight have fencing up anyway don't they?

It's really irritating in F1 where they can veer 100 feet or more off the actual 'race circuit' whenever needed. :yuk:

You can see his car on it's side spinning back across the grass from the rear view camera of Kurt's car.

I've checked the replay on sky+ several times and can't see the #19.

As for the tv coverage...personal preference would be Fox for the whole season. I would take the old fox first half, TNT second half tho.

Yea, I'm not in favor of turning the grass into vast asphalt parking lots either as the grass keeps drivers from going 5-wide on the infield which is a good thing. Besides, cars can flip sliding sideways on asphalt too.

Still no photos or amateur footage of the big wreck?

This will turn out like Geoff Bodine's truck crash and we'll have to wait 10 years to see anything new.

i wish there was more video too but sadly there are no stands on that straightaway and it would be very hard to get a good angle on it by somebody videotaping in the infield.

I bet ESPN has more footage of that than Sadler's wreck

Yep, from the exit of the tunnel turn all the way to the end of the main grandstand the outside wall has catch fence. Most of the infield has it too in that same area.

I guess they need something... their solution to the '02 Park wreck was to fortify the barriers with compacted dirt - and that proved even nastier in '03 when Jeff Green wrecked hard.

It was a great couple days at the track, but the first half of the race was on par with every other Pocono race I've ever watched\attended. Lame as hell, then picks up in the second half with some great racing.

As for the Sadler wreck, I could see Kurt hitting the inside wall, but where the 19 hit behind him was blocked by the big scoring tower on pit lane. By the time I noticed he was spinning after the hit, he was pretty much coming to a stop. Sorry... friggin' ESPN. :x

The sad part is, there is actually more footage of Jack Roush's plane crash than Elliot Sadler's accident. Someone posted links to some photos of Roush's accident on the iRacing forums. I'm not sure if they've been cross-posted here.

Because NASCAR for some reason that they won't explain doesn't publically share the actual G-forces recorded in a crash according to black box data, we don't know exactly what the number is for Sadler's crash. However, NASCAR told him that it was the hardest crash since NASCAR began collecting g-force data.

I was thinking about that yesterday. I have no idea why they wouldn't want to release the number in an instance like this. Surely it would be a ringing endorsement for how effective their safety measures are. :? Oh well. Maybe somehow the word will get leaked. Very curious to see how much it was.

I seem to remember the crash Kyle Petty had at Bristol in 2003 was the highest recorded hit up till then, at 80G's impact. So it's higher than that......wow :8:
