I wouldn't say its the worst ever, but for sure one of the top 5.

I instantly thought of 5 crashes worse than this. They all involved actual human beings losing their lives.

I'd rather not think about them...

The argument could be made it was a top 5 Nascar crash where all the drivers walked away, that is debatable, but including the loss of human life? Are you fucking kidding me?

There is no way an actual person would make this post and actually believe it. It was just an ironic post, right?

It is bad, but yeah, the Geoff Bodine wreck in 2000 is even worse. I could argue that the Kyle Larson one's worse than this.

It slots in under those and just above Joey Coulter doing the RCR cartwheel in the fence at the end of the truck race a few years ago.

I just figure the metric people are using for "worst" is "most spectacular looking".

Which is pretty gross too but yeah.

at least that's the metric i assume people are using because i'm totally baffled otherwise

Definitely not the worst crash, but it is one of the worst in recent history.

well at the very least we saw what a Bodine like crash at daytona would end up like in todays cars. im willing to bet dillon is much happier to be in his shoes right now.

Josh Wise lost 8 laps because his battery came unplugged and couldn't drive the car back to the pits

This begs the question, what have restrictor plates achieved? They were introduced to stop cars going into the catchfence or the stands, but I'm pretty sure there has been a much higher propensity for cars to hit the fence since their introduction than there was before. Probably because the cars are so packed together they knock each other into the air in wrecks like this.

I really don't think it'd be wise to have big heavy stockcars going the speeds that no plates would involve. The extra speed would make it more likely for a car to clear the fence in an accident and also make regular accidents more serious.

Also I'm not sure just how much the cars would actually be spread out. I think it'd depend on the aero package. If they could go flat out then they'd still be in a huge pack I think; just going absurdly fast.

All restrictor plates have done is allow bad drivers to look good

I'm not suggesting do nothing, I'm saying it might be time to try something different since the big pack racing restrictor plates bring seems to greatly increase the likelihood of cars in the fence. Reducing horsepower through other means might allow for the same speeds without the clusterfuck component.

And if you want to know what cars without plates would be like, a pretty obvious indication is what they were like before the plates (spread out after a few laps) or what they are like at Michigan (spread out after a few laps). There is absolutely nothing to suggest they would stay in a big pack without the plates on.

This is of course ignoring reality, which is that NASCAR needs the clusterfuck component to sell.
