If it makes Denny feel any better, the wall-of-death spot ultimately didn't make any difference - Bread's DQ gives Ross an extra 2 stage points which, if Ross had finished where he started the final lap, would have left them tied.

He was penalized for the Indy deal though, even though honestly he shouldn't have been. NASCAR told the drivers in the drivers meeting prior to the race to use that if they missed the chicane.

Did he miss it on purpose? You're damn right he did, but noone can prove that, unless there's some in car audio I don't recall hearing. I know that in these situations common sense should prevail, but NASCAR said that was the option if you missed the chicane. There wasn't a mention about you have to stop for a couple of seconds and then use the access lane, just that you could use it.

I saw Chastain referred to above as "dumb". I wouldn't call it dumb, I'd call it brilliant. Exploiting the gray area as much as humanly possible. He drives for Trackhouse... not really one of the top dollar teams. Sometimes it takes brains over raw horsepower to beat the big dogs. Pretty sure Chad Knaus once said, "If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying." Everyone manipulates the rules to the fullest extent, and then NASCAR has to pass a new one.

I'd say this move gets banned for next year and won't be allowed again.

I'm pulling for Ross just because it's Trackhouse vs. the big three in Hendrick, Gibbs and Penske.

what they should police is that ugly driving on the apron they usually do at the dog leg

the indy cheat was provable. they have the telemetry data to know whether he bothered with the brakes at all entering turn one

personally don't think they need to make any big rules change.

they just need to make the car not as rigid so it can't handle doing it as well. Not like it wouldn't work with the CoT chassis though as Carl & Larson has both tried before tho.
(also the same reason they need to soften this thing up so we don't have drivers pulling off the track mid-race because they suddenly get a headache after a bumper hit)

one of the crew chief's estimated that Ross G load was near what the CART guys were dealing with at Texas in '01, granted it was for a much shorter time

another angle to consider is that the SAFER barrier foam is apparently more stiffer now compared to what it originally was meant to be.

Ross Chastain is really a pioneer in motorsport

He's the first driver to activate Attack Mode in a racing series that doesn't have it!

In all seriousness, the circumstances were just right for that desperate move to happen, and honestly, I love it. Nothing in the rulebook says you can't wallride (really, it's attempt at your own risk). It should stay that way because the last thing we need is a poorly-written rule that is so wishy-washy that even those who have a brain will mald over what's legal and what's illegal.

I'll echo racer612008's words here: don't change the rulebook, change the body rigidity. Don't want this to happen again? Don't make the bodies next-to-bulletproof when someone swipes the fence.

It's not surprising, this is the oval extreme version of what Alonso did at the Russian GP last year:
