There's always the often forgotten system before that. One hour (Well 2 since they had 2 sessions) with no lap limits.

The lap 12 lap limit was only really introduced to spice things up (Sound familiar?) & it was that which led to empty tracks at the start of each session as they didn't want to waste a run with slower track conditions. If you watch sessions from the early 90s before the 12 lap limit came in you see there's a lot more action through the entire session.


But to be honest I'd actually prefer they stick with what we have now. We get 3 periods of excitement towards the end of each segment rather than just 1 & each lap has a bit more meaning because there so tight on time with a bit more at stake which over the past decade has led to some mistakes & surprises with drivers not advancing unexpectedly (Vettel at Singapore for example).

The old 1 hour system was fine but overall nowhere near as fun or exciting as what we have now IMO.

one good rule for qualifying could be "Mercedes can take part in the qualifying but will not go further than Q1"

Why does quali have to be uber exciting? Not many watch it either way.

The massively empty grandstands in Malaysia attest to that.

The empty grandstands are more the fact the motorcycle GP is in a few weeks and that is more popular.
