As a racing purist, the sound doesn't bother me. The fantastic racing that we've had this year more than justifies the new formula.

The problem however, is that with this new formula, an icon has been killed: the high-pitch scream. The iconic sound that's been with the sport since its inception, with the exception of the first turbo-era. I hope the casual fan can see past that.

This and only this

Seconded.

Nope, I've never been into motorsport to become deafened tbh.

I love the new engines, you can hear the nuances of throttle usage, tyre squeal and even off track stuff like crowd noise.
Plus the extra torque and how much harder they made these years cars to control make even free practice sessions more exciting to watch.

Nope, sound is fine, and I'm sure they'll get a bit louder as they are pushed further and the teams become more confident with them

The looks of the cars however, I have a massive problem with and need immediate attention...

I'd like to listen to the cars in person as it probably sounds different on the TV.

I've always said that I prefer the pitch of the current engines. The old ones were a little too high pitched and it's nice that they're deeper again now. I just wish they were a little bit louder, maybe. I like being able to hear the crowd and tyre lock ups though, so I guess there are positives either way.

I believe they would be even more attracted to racing formulas that don't defean them and make their chest vibrate.
It's the main complaint I have when introducing 'normal people' to racing, loud noise really is a turn-off that makes them enjoy the experience less and want to go home earlier than if they could sit down, be able to talk more easily to the neighbours without ear plugs.

Plus there's the whole threat to racetracks from the idiot "Move into an area, don't check there's a racetrack nearby, protest to the council to get it closed down instead of sueing the estate agent" crowd.
Quieter engines lowers the chances of that happening.

I think it's the direction motorsport will have to head in the future.

I was really surprised that the lack of sound when I was at Silverstone. I had heard all these "oh, when your at the track it sounds better than it does on tv"

Feck off does it! If anything (imo), the sound is WORSE in person. The beauty of the V8s were you could hear them leave the pits and following in your head around the track. The only time i remotely heard them on another part of the track was standing at the Maggotts/Becketts/CHapel complex and I could hear them burbling around the loop, onto the Wellington Straight.

When we (my friend, his wife and I) stood down hanger straight during the red flag, we had no idea the session had restarted until a car suddenly came by.

Speed is impressive, thats about it!

Let's start a poll about the absolute top speed at Monza.

I'm not here to fool around: we're talking race day, in the draft, with ballsout boost and open DRS.

I predict 355kph if a Williams is leading a group of Mercedes-powered attacking cars.

FAIL list, Tuesday should be "New tarmac runoff spotted, 3 page debate/moan about the lack of challenge in circuits and the merits/downsides of Tarmac vs Gravel+flip discussion"

Feat. mention of Arnoux v. Villeneuve as a plot twist.

Damn you I just came here to ask the same question. We have seen 330+kph at China, Germany and Spa.

I am going to take a punt at 360kph at Monza.

In terms of driving skills: maybe.
In terms of excitement: it was awesome!

Can never get with the notion that any kind of side by side battling like that can be seen as overrated.

That's the kind of thing that we're all watching hoping to see, right?

I think Bahrain this year might well be up there on those lists for a good many years.

When I saw ROS and HAM go wheel to wheel for the first time in that race, I thought "wow, close, and risky considering they are teammates". Never dared I image that the fight would go on. Easily the best race this year so far.

They were clumsily running each other off the track. If they had that battle and stayed within track limits the whole time, it would be the greatest ever. But it was next level clumsy in my eyes, was just lucky they didn't take each other out the 5 occasions they could have.

Alternatives - Hamilton battling with Webber at Malaysia 2009 and at Korea in 2011 or 2012 (?)

I thought Alonso V Vettel during the British GP this year was quite entertaining. Having Alonso in a poor car hasn't been to bad because his racing flare comes out.
