Funny that of all those drivers in that picture, only three of them ever raced for McLaren.

Good spot on Simon, though I've seen a suggestion it might be Firman. Fairly sure it's Heidfeld next to him. Apparently second from the right is Zonta

Yeah, looks like you're right with Heidfeld and Zonta. It's definitely Simon on the left though, can't be Firman as he was in Formula Nippon by the time this picture was taken.

That's what I thought. McLaren were definitely backing him: https://www.grandprix.com/features/joe- ... teams.html

Apparently the idea is Zonta was going to share the 2nd West Competition car with Minassian that season, which I didn't know: http://grandprix.com/ns/ns01533.html

the tobacco always improved liveries, even when they weren't allowed to show

Wesley Graves never knew about him either

Found a report on him that basically blames McLaren for favouring Hamilton because they wanted to have the first black driver in F1. He was released from the program in 99 and then retired after his father had to sell his company.

As for Zonta, he even tested the car in 98.

Absurd in its time, common sight on modern tracks these days.

Definitely one of the strangest circuits ever seen in F1. They managed to get a 2.2 mile track into that tiny space.

More overtaking spots than Abu Dhabi.

Almost looks like a karting track, with all those tiny turns that are not actually turns, only there to maximize space between hairpins and chicanes. Must be fun to drive for like a couple sessions, and then forget it ever existed.

Looks very different nowadays...

And after F1 was done with Vegas, Indycar turned it into an oval

The Indycar races there were much better.

To be fair, the 2 F1 races there weren't the worst you've ever seen. It was a track that did produce some decent racing.

The remains of Clay Regazzoni's car at Long Beach in 1980. How the hell did he survive that :8:

And to think he'd have been largely alright if they hadn't screwed up the extraction, from what I've read
