almost 15 years since this infamous race and one of the worst penalties in the history of not just F1, but sport in general

Lewis shortcut a corner and then used the momentum he got to overtake someone and got a penalty for it? He would never have overtaken him had he not gained an advantage the corner before.

Even if you disagree with that judgement, calling it the worst penalty in the history of sport, or ever, is incredibly stupid. 2006 Monza comes to mind. When Schumacher hit Montoya at Malaysia and Montoya got the penalty, Senna's exclusion from Suzuka after hitting Prost at the chicane there are 10-15 I could rattle off that are worse than that.

I think we need a thread specifically for overblown motorsport hyperbole. E.g:

Pre-2002 Hockenheim was the best track ever

Monaco is the worst track on the calendar

All chicanes are terrible

We need to bring back refueling

Sprint races will be the downfall of the sport

Any take that a champion isn't truly a great unless they could have won in a Minardi

1000% in support of this. We can call it the Facebook Autosport Forum Nostalgia thread. :flag:

I'd rather watch a Trulli train than an Albon train tbh.

Not a picture but a video of the Tyrrell P34. With cameo's from a Leyton House, Mclaren and a Benetton

Nigel Mansell is auctioning off his entire memorabilia collection. On a related note, TIL the origin of his signature jumbo visor strip is... red gaffer tape

Lewis shortcut a corner and then used the momentum he got to overtake someone and got a penalty for it? He would never have overtaken him had he not gained an advantage the corner before.

How you end up gaining an advantage when you spend the majority of the straight off the throttle giving the place back to restore the balance from when you were taking to the chicane to avoid an accient is a mystery known only to the FIA
Lewis lifted off, let kimi by, then Kimi either due to the conditions or because he smelled an oppurtunity, braked WAY early for T1 than lewis was expecting, forcing lewis to swerve to the inside as more crash avoidance than an attempt at an overtake

The Frustrating thing about it is in Japan 06 an almost identical situation happened to alonso who cut a chicane then gave the place back to a car before overtaking at the next corner.
A lap or so later the team told him to return the place because they thought the FIA would penalise them for an unfair advantage, alonso does this, then the FIA radios them and says "lol what are you talking about, that's not a rule, we wouldn't have said anything"

So the FIA not only didn't have a rule for this situation but they went 100% opposite what was precedent just to stick it to Mclaren, who they had a bugbear over stiffing that year whenever they could

And yeah, if there'd been gravel at the Bus Stop, none of that would've happened :whistling:
(Or if they hadn't changed it from the 2004/5 but stop which actually was ok, even if not as good as the original Bus Stop, or no bus stop at all, or the track should've been in its original 200 mile layout, whatever :p

Would you kindly direct us to this thread? I'm seeing new stuff on the forum but I want to be sure before I start trauma-dumping every boomer thought I have about motor racing
