I only realised today that Bahrain is just about a week to go. Thought there was the classical 2 week break actually.

And only realised today as well that the BBC is bringing live coverage from China!! (does it do so also for Bahrain, if it goes ahead?)

Lotus have filed a protest against Mercedes DRS/F-Duct system:

It was legal in Round 1.
It was legal in Round 2.

What has possibly changed for it to be illegal in Round 3? Still, the way Charlie & co operate, they'll find something wrong with it.

Why make a protest over a car that will struggle to finish in the top 6.

It'll still qualify ahead of them and ruin their race.

They also want to be absolutely certain it is legal before they spend money developing their own.

Because Lotus will struggle to do the same?

Its legal, credit for Mercedes for coming up something like that, it's so clever.

So was the mass damper, but it was banned for being movable aerodynamics, and this Mercedes system actually fits that term better than the mass damper did. The third pedal was also legal, but was banned for being rear wheel steering, which it wasn't.

Legal doesn't mean jack when it gets to this stage.

The issue for Lotus is that at the start of 2012 they had a system that had been declared legal by FIA but then declared illegal after protests by other teams.

Which was pretty unfair.

I'm not anal retentive enough to know the rules, I know the system, FIA as Phil said has cleared it twice.

If you know the system then you know it's useless. Both examples I posted were declared legal for over half a season before finally being banned when other teams complained. The amazing thing about both examples is that both were banned under existing regulations, without any sort of change to the wording.

Declared legal by the FIA stewards historically means nothing. It just means you can run it until enough noise is made from elsewhere. And when we actually find out exactly what the hole on the RBR chassis is for, you can bet that it'll be complained about too.

The protest has been rejected. Expect an appeal from Lotus. Or a badly written PR statement by one of their kids.

The tagline being 'a bone-shaking experience'.

Or, alternatively, 'it'll rock your world'.

Ryan's never been banned. If you banned RtN then I think that would be following FIA-type penalties. :p

[FIA Mode]
We make up the rules and we reserve the right to change them to penalise someone for not breaking them.

Nail on the head from Dieter Rencken on Autosport PLUS

"F1 faces not only international condemnation, but places at risk the welfare of all those who attend the race – whether these are F1 personnel or not. If but one tragedy results – and chaos has been vowed by aggrieved protesters – Formula 1 will have squandered its hard-earned reputation for managing risk all for a single event with no history or standing to speak of."

Anyway, a driver has spoken out, if thinly. Grosjean was in Bahrain last February for the abortive GP2 Asia round.

Romain Grosjean: "We were 300 meters where there were demonstrations. Impressive images, we were sleeping with clothes and our passport in the pocket. We brought our suitcase every morning when we were coming to the track. But if F1 is coming back, it's that the saefty measure were taken, we cannot live again in such situation"
