AUSTRALIAN Formula One racer Mark Webber has been seriously injured when he was hit by a car while competing in his multisport challenge in Tasmania.

Webber, who drives for F1's Red Bull team, was cycling along Fortesque Bay Road, near Port Arthur on the Tasman peninsula, when he and a Nissan X-Trail vehicle collided, Tasmania Police Sergeant Jon Ford said.

Sgt Ford said Webber was competing in his own charity event, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge, a 250km challenge using mountain bikes, kayaks and trekking, when the accident happened abotu 12.40pm (AEDT).

"As a result of the collision, the rider, Mark Webber, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries," Sgt Ford said.

"He was attended at the scene by paramedics attached to the event before being airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital."

Sgt Ford said the event was being raced on open public roads and it was not known whether the stage along Fortesque Bay Road was cordoned off specifically for the racers.

The male driver of the Nissan X-trail escaped injury but no further details were known about the motorist, he said.

Webber was competing on the penultimate day of the five-day challenge, which also includes abseiling and whitewater rafting

Thats not good at all, at least its not life threatening, but could have a big impact on next year depending on how bad the injuries are

Wow, hope he will be fine for Melbourne but he is going to miss a hang of a lot of testing time.

I always thought the Mark Webber Challenge was pretty full on and was surprised he had not sustained some form of injury during the event over the years.

Going by the first article says he sustained multiple fractures to his arms and legs. Now that sounds alot worse than A fracture....but you know i will wait until there is a more detailed report but the second article saying he has sustained serious but not life threatening injuries makes me think they must be pretty bad fractures.
The career ending part is more due to the fact that he will miss soo much testing and that will seriously set him back. And this i feel will end his career.

Was just on 10 news, and they said he had a fracture of the lower leg and that he was conscious and talking after the accident.

If it's simply a fractured leg, he will easily make Melbourne. Going to be hugely disadvantaged though, specially with the completely different cars.

Depends on what damage has occurred. He won't be driving for 2 months at least. He'll probably won't be able to fly to Spain or France for testing.

Damn, that sounds bad.
Hope he will make a full recovery and return in full strength.
It shows that driving on public roads can be as dangerous as racing wheel to wheel at 300 km/h.
