Race control continues to misunderstand their job. Baffling penalty.

Agree. We could ban all wheel-to-wheel racing then.

Meanwhile, half the field got away with outrageous unsafe releases in the pits without a single investigation. But that's fine, just mechanics that might be mowed down on live TV, let's focus on inconsequential contacts

Between the dominance, weather, and that steward decision, this is becoming an incredibly depressing weekend.

Well. I don't know if that worth the wait, but I'm tired.
Long day, and F3 Feature race starts tomorrow at 8:30 local time. :tired:

funny. First you cannot race in rain, now you cannot pass unless there's an avenue for the slower car

simply great

dunno why don't they do like the nascar all star race where caution laps don't count

So just a thought: as these seem to be formation laps, they don't count to the race, right? In case they would actually start right after those formation laps, wouldn't it make sense to not actually do the formation laps but instead wait in the pits for the safety car and the field to come in and be thr first to change and go back out?

They weren't, the official timing system started couting laps. They can do this (was done at Spa 1997 for the same reasons)

Additional formation laps have always counted against the race laps tally, nothing new here e.g. if someone stalls on the grid at the start of a formation lap, and you have to do an additional formation lap, the race laps gets deducted by 1.

For fuck's sake guys, do we all have short term memory or something or do we just like being "purists" and still whinge about this? Look, we all know with recent events that F1 is always going to play things far more extra cautious than needed when there's a visibility issue. So yes, that's always going to end up with them waiting until there's very little spray by which point the inter is easily going to be the faster tire. Even though this is the so-called pinnacle of the sport, they're not going to throw the drivers out there and let them sort it out, even if the cars/drivers/tires are technically capable of handling it. They're not going to risk the blowback due to liability reasons. Plus the last thing we'd all want is a lengthy red flag anyway.

Lmao. I paused the race just before the start because I had to run some errands. Totally forgot that I wasn't watching the race live when I posted here :D

Penalty is probably fair - the onboard shows that Hamilton understeered into Perez.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Isn't that just more evidence that it wasn't an intentional offense or even reckless driving on Lewis' part, meaning the penalty was incorrect one and it was just a racing incident. If Perez hadn't suffered any damage, I'm 100% sure the stewards wouldn't have even investigated the incident.

It's Case Grosjean all over again: that is, the stewards allow consequences to affect their decisions.
a) If you lock your brakes at La Source and hit no one, there's obviously no penalty. It was a mistake that can happen to anyone anywhere.
b) If you lock your breaks at La Source, and 15 cars get totaled, there shouldn't be a penalty in that case either. It was a mistake that can happen to anyone anywhere.
If it wasn't punishable driving in case a), neither it can be punishable driving in case b).

And we cannot require anyone "to not make mistakes", because we aren't gods.

I don't think a collision needs to be deliberate or caused through recklessness for it to get a penalty. Hamilton lost control of his car and Perez was giving him room, so the burden lies on Hamilton. It's not that much different from Silverstone a couple of years ago, except that Hamilton was further alongside today.

on other hand, a car will not perform well with a hole punched on the sidepod
