"The driver had just finished his fastest lap and had started another push lap. He was at T1 when the red flag was displayed, however at that point he was already 1.5 seconds over his delta time.

[...]

"Comparison of telemetry with that of Car 31 showed that in general for the rest of the lap he was approximately the same speed as Car 31 which complied with the delta times in each mini-sector. We regard this as a mitigating circumstance.

"However, the regulation is very clear and whilst there is no question of the driver acting dangerously or driving unsafely, there was a breach and thus a penalty has to be imposed. [...]

"We note the intention of the regulation is to ensure a car is not speeding during a red flag situation and there is no evidence that the speed was excessive in this case."

So if Nico didn't exceed delta speeds from the point the flag was shown, and the stewards didn't think his driving was dangerous, what's the point of the penalty? Other than the FIA once again interpreting the rulebook literally in anal-retentive fashion rather than the clear intention of the rules?

There seems to be no common sense applied at all. Reading that, I don't understand Nico's penalty. Also, why has Sainz only been given a 3 place penalty? He impeded faster cars at least twice. Gasly picked up a double penalty for the same thing, only one race ago. The inconsistency is ridiculous.

He doesn't drive for one of the top three teams, so even if Steiner pulls out old race director notes or comes up with a dozen pages of telemetry to say he lifted a bit after all, they won't listen.

Sainz almost caused a three car wreck at top speed and gets a lighter penalty, go figure...

Right. I mean this sentence just makes no sense at all.

Quote:

Do they mean that he crossed the line and was approaching turn 1 when the red was shown, then got through turn 1 and then slowed? Thus he was 1.5 seconds faster from the entry of turn 1 to the exit of turn 1? That is the only thing I can think of. Poorly worded. Otherwise how can you be faster than a delta when there was no delta to start with??

What about a certain incident at 130R last year that got no penalty at all

So one driver accidentally goes too fast due to timing of red flag and gets dropped 3 places.

Another driver dangerously blocks 3 drivers and almost kills them and also gets dropped 3 places.

Yeah, makes sense

Remember a couple of years ago at Baku when there was a red flag just as Norris passed the pit entrance at full speed, didn´t smash the brakes and told immediately over the radio that it would have been incredibly unsafe to do so, and still got a penalty?

On the other hand, Hulkenberg shouldn´ t complain too much, because if they had redflagged it a couple of seconds sooner, he would not have been 2nd either. And without the red flag, others would have gone faster. So 5th is still great.

Cowards. I was looking forward to the start to see if some of the top guys run wide and has to wait for the whole pack to go by until rejoining. Now they won't lose a single position. :slaphead:

A ferrari has just hit that new wall at the start/finish line and had quite the accident, torn the rear axel out

We've had one (lightly) into the wall of champions too

26 minutes or so to go on the race clock:

At least 0% chance of rain is less annoying than rain that is looming around the circuit but never comes.

Hopefully that's enough for jinxing it.
