2006 - A contact between Yuji Ide and Christijan Albers caused the dutch to flip and the japanese to have his superlicense revoked. A good pitstop strategy put Schumacher ahead of Alonso, prompting a good chase in the closing laps, and his first victory in that year

a race that might have no passing but it has a character of its own

F1 history at Imola

Image
1980 - Nelson Piquet won the only Italian GP to be held outside Monza. Villeneuve escaped unscathed a crash that resembled the one that killed Ratzenberger

Image
1989 - An early fiery crash with Gerhard Berger brought red flag and another new start where Senna breached his gentlemen's agreement with Prost, thus turning the championship fight into a war. Race organization forgot to take the caps off the champagne bottles for podium celebration

Image
1994 - In what was considered the saddest weekend in motorsports history, the San Marino GP was plagued by crashes and incidents that left mechanics, crowds and Rubens Barrichello injured; and claimed the lifes of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna. Michael Schumacher won for the 3rd time in a row

Image
2001 - Ralf Schumacher won his first race, turning the Schumacher brothers to be the first brother pairing to win F1 races

I'm really interested to see if all of the attempts to make passing easier since the 2009 rules will have any effect whatsoever. I think DRS down to Tamburello should at least allow some passing, but I still don't expect much.

With only 90 mins of practice time and gravel traps being so close, I'm sure everyone is crossing their fingers that no one will do "nicos".

Anyway, it's so nostalgic to see F1 cars return to Imola. :beard: Back in 2006 it seemed a wise move to drop the track from the calendar, as Imola (along with Hungary and Indianapolis) usually provided just a good nap. But now, with today's cars and rules, it's totally unknown territory and the old-school look makes a real contrast to tracks like Sochi or Abu Dhabi. So I don't think Imola's gonna be a snoozer like it was 20 years ago. The "new" last corner will make it a high-speed track with proper chance for overtaking.

No rain. No mixed conditions, sadly. If only Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen collided in the first corner.....

EDIT: What's with the huge whitespace after video?

To be fair, you could post that in every F1 thread and have 100% success rate. :(

Excited to see the cars around Imola again. I haven't really watched any racing here recently, so I've no idea if the layout is good for passing or not. Grass and gravel is a bonus.

passing will be brutally hard here

if Hamilton wins this one he equals Schumacher in another record: most wins with one team. Michael has 72 for Ferrari and Lewis has 71 with Merc

It's cute that we're all nostalgic over one of the most terribly snoozefest-inducing circuits on account of the atmosphere. I blame Tilke.

Tilke? More like thanks to Mercedes leaving us with one of the most uncompetitive seasons in F1 that even a race at a dull track at Imola is something to look forward to.

Yeah, at worst we get another HAM/BOT/VER podium, which is exactly the same result we've had in most of the races lately

Heck, after some of the recent rounds we've had, I'm not going to object for it to be hard to overtake - if anything, the field has had a tendency to sort itself too well. A race like 2005 or 2006 would be a lot more interesting

TBF it has a shitton longer straight now, taking away one of the knee-jerk chicanes added after 1994

If 1994 hadn't happened and it was still in its original layout, it would've remained on of the greatest races on the calender instead of one of the worst.
They just threw chicanes at it to slow the cars down with no thought about how they might affect the racing.
Three was too many. But that had to be seen to be doing something, I guess.

So the racing will probably be average, not as bad as post 1994 imola but not as good as pre-94 Imola, according to my xpert analysis.

I'm really excited about Imola. It's such a fun track to race on but watching F1 there is a bit of a different story. I happened to visit the track two years ago so it'll be nice to see it on TV soon. I don't expect much but it'll bring back some memories, back in the day when it was the European season opener, the grass green and the flowers are blooming, and then some Sunday afternoon boredom haha

The destruction of Imola in 1995 was worse than Hockenheim. They forgot about making overtaking spots. The Villeneuve chicane is one of the worst corners in racing.

I'd get rid of Variante Alta, that chicane ruins any possible overtaking into Rivazza.

Was visiting Bologna a couple years ago and decided to drive down to visit Imola for the afternoon. Was kinda surreal walking around the quiet deserted track and looking at the corners in person recollecting all these moments from races I'd seen on TV.

They have to straighten out the braking zone into Rivazza as well. Nothing kills passing chances like a curved braking zone.

I am much more favour of your optimism than my natural cynicism

You're right about the modifications though; I feel like they could put the old Tamburello > Tosa layout straight back in with a SAFER barrier and maybe re-profiling some of the walls. A run directly from Rivazza to Tosa would be amazing.
