5 out of 6 if you include Canada and ignore France

Canada was an interesting one (resembles a lot what we saw in Hungary). But, at least for me, the stewards' interference was a huge blow that ruined the whole experience.

Entirely agree. Which is a shame as we witnessed an intense struggle between two of the top drivers of their generation, and all we remember the race for is THAT stewarding decision.

well the cars are still crap. ugly, too long, too reliable. Impossible to support a team while the machinery is not helping

I think after Canada and France, there was so much controversy about steward decisions, and so much demand for change. It caused a bit of a shock. After that, they actually did ease off and stopped punishing that harsh. Which made racing better.
Austria and Silverstone were good races but could have been equaly bad as Canada and France, had they punished every contact like they did before. Hockenheim could have been a flying start after doing 10 laps behind SC.

I think F1 realised "yeah, Canada and France were rock bottom, let's not do that again". And it is working.

I do think before Canada, Leclerc would've been penalised for sideswiping Bottas and breaking his front wing, but either they've decided to completely back off on penalties or, since it was the second race in a row they let them off with no in race penalty for something legitimately penalisable, they're trying their hardest to make it up to Ferrari after Canada.

I would think so, but the incident wasn't even investigated. So, I really don't know.

Lap 1 incidents are rarely penalised unless we have a pile-up of sorts and someone's clearly at fault. Maybe if this had happened later on, they'd act differently but it's basically like Turn 1 rule in speedway (which nobody knows what I'm talking about). Much drama over nothing IMO.

First turn bunching lol

I miss my days commentating on Speedway. So many arbitary rules I had to learn on the fly (how TF can you still have a jump start if they don't touch the tapes? WHAT'S THE POINT OF THE TAPES IF THEY'RE NOT TO INDICATE A JUMP START OR NOT ARGHHH)

But anyway, off topic lol

This is better than DRS fests. If the BMW engine wasn't so awesome those Ferraris would've had a much easier time...

DRS battles just don't last that long.

People bitched then about the tyre graining and it only happening due to michelin tyres coming up to temp quicker than bridgestones, so that "wasn't fair" either

F1 history is full of "unfair" rules and advantages the fans will always bitch about instead of enjoying what's in front of them

Not that you're going to have much success arguing the superiority of the high downforce, grooved tyred, driver aid, refueling era.

If we cherry-pick, we will find examples of both. What you said applies in the above battle, where a car had a significant tyre disadvantage. That rarely happened back then, and I agree that nowadays this ends up into a straight pass.

Between evenly matched cars/drivers however, the truth is that all battles used to remain blocked at around a second behind the opponent for laps and laps, unable to get closer. Michael vs Ralf at Montreal (2001 or 2002) and Brazil (2002), Montoya vs Michael at Monza 2003, etc etc.

A finely-tuned DRS would've turned those attemptless battles into an actual fight for position, ala Rosberg vs Hamilton at Bahrain 2014.

Lately I haven't complained that much.

My only recent complaints are: FIA must do something to bring more teams (20 cars only is something depressing). Something have to be done to reduce costs and bring more teams. A grid with 24 or 26 cars would be great.

Barcelona renewed its contract with F1, they shouldn't in my opinion. Jerez should comeback and German Grand Prix should stick on the schedule. That's all.

F1 fans are idiots and should only cautiously be asked their opinion about the sport. Every video from the early 2000s has the same comments, people praising the V10, grooved tyres, and refuelling, and calling it "real F1".

You dumbfucks, I watched every race session from that era. It sucked balls. For every exciting battle you see uploaded, we had long, painful, comatose races with large gaps from the get go, insipid racecraft-destroying strategies, and absolutely no hint of a position change including in the midfield.

We're having it good. Let's look ahead and improve on the current formula (where the field is bunched albeit in two groups, and where things actually happen) to make it better, but for God's sake, the solution is not at all in the close past or even in the distant past. I only miss the danger and the look/fashion of it, all the rest was crap

When this thread was first created, we went on to have a few good races. Maybe this can happen again.
