and apparently Ferrari forgot to inform LeClerc that Vettel had that penalty. So he almost gotten within 5s.

The precedent they used was a very questionable decision. I remember that even Kimi himself said the penalty given to Verstappen at Suzuka was exaggerated. However, that was way more blatant than this one.

Also, I think the precedent this will set is terrible. Okay, Hamilton had to make an evasive movement because of Vettel's actions. Under this understanding, Bottas needed to do the same as he lifted the throttle on the straight during his battle against Ricciardo, who should have been given a penalty too.

This strict understanding of the regulations will end up banning the defense of positions.

And if you have to make such a thorough analysis to come to a decision, it's better not interfere.

so it means that if that happened in the 80's it would be no penalty since there wasn't any onboard cameras

But it isn't the 80's so that suggestion is irrelevant.

plus in the 80's we had tons of drivers mistakes like that and none were subject to punishment

The thing is, the next race we're going to fucking Paul Ricard, which has about 12 areas a lap for this to happen again due to its shitty supermarket carpark with arbitrary white lines design. :slaphead:

And thinking about it, this race got so close to being a stone cold classic

If no penalty: Lewis and Seb will battle nose to tail until the final corner. Pretty tast for modern F1, even more so if they swapped positions a couple of times (we have no idea how the penalty affected the mental state of Seb and Lewis tbh, did Lewis genuinely want to pass or just lurk behind Vettel...)

Also: consider if Seb had actually hit Lewis and took them both out of the race
While the penalty he would receive would probably be a lot less controversial (10 places for France, I'd assume)
we'd have a Spain 2016 like effect with Leclerc winning his first race, Renault and Force India having a great day and Bottas gaining important points on Lewis to really close up the title fight between them
So yeah, while we got the suckiest of all possibilities, take some cheer that F1 fans in a parallel universe have had a pretty epic Grand Prix

I miss the days when that happened at least once a season

Ferrari forgot LeClerc

Hope you don't mind, I took liberty to make your statement more concise and more general :p
