He was a very good driver, but I can't imagine even reading one book authored by him.

I was a Berger fan and 1989 was a tough year.

I had the mis-pleasure of reading his 3rd book, apparently 2 biographies wasn't enough of a cash grab (thankfully I only paid $5 for it) but he seemed to be completely full of shit. He said he was nearly beaten to death with kids with bats when he was a teenager, every F1 race was a struggle because he suffered somewhere between 500-1000 injuries in the sport, broke every bone 12 times. He liked a lot of mayo on his sandwiches.

I really, really dislike him now.

TBF, most of that was Murray Walker punching him in the face while trying to interview him after races

"Nigel, you've got a nice cut on your wrist from the podium trophy, can you let them see it?"

*Nige gets his wrist out*

"Right down THERE!!!!!!!! *Murray pokes it* OOOOH I'M SORRY!!"

I always got the impression his body was made of paper and thin plastic tbh. Aside from the well-known cases like the poking incident @

mentions, there was also stuff like the time where he shunted at the last chicane in Canada, but then rolled to the middle of the track and 'passed out'. I don't even think it looked convincing to the commentators tbh.

There was also some kind of drama when he was racing in Grand Prix Masters - I went to the Silverstone round and there was some kind of problem on his car that stopped him running, but also rumours of some kind of injury or illness.

/Edit yeah, he didn't shunt so much as bounce over the gravel and spin:

funny that his Dallas fainting might be the only legit dramatic moment he had. Someone here in the forum even said that Mansell had a good physical condition and was always prone to that, having to put a oxygen tube attached on his helmet, while Rosberg, a bulky scandinavian that smoked and didn't cared too much won those tough races like a walk in the park

Nelson Piquet once told that the Suzuka crash was also overdramatic as there was a team member who was once in the army and could see if someone is really in pain

there was also that time in Indy where he crashed coming out of the pits and stumbled into a track marshall because of "boiling water leak"

Good thing that we have 20 real grown ups in F1 these days!

Weih, I don't want these tyres!
Weih, he touched me, what was he thinking, honestly!
Weih, there's a guy 3 seconds in front of me and he STILL has not been given blue flags and parked his car in the dirt so I can pass him!

The interesting thing about Berger missing Monaco in 1989 is that Ferrari tried to get Mario Andretti to step in

Hmmm...not sure if it ruins the flow of the last sector or improves the overtaking in T1.

I think it makes it easier to catch the tow of the car ahead when approaching the straight.

I guess that could allow DRS zone starting right at the beggining of the straight

Mansell would fit right in tbh. They would play his radio more than Hamilton's.

BBC Grandstand did that 26 years ago

For example, go to 6:25

I was thinking the same. But I believe there is some sense in this.

It always seemed to me that being in a top car was enough to look decent. But then we had Gasly this year struggling to keep his Red Bull within the top 6, something even Albon in a mid-season swap or Ricciardo on the verge of leaving Red Bull were capable of doing.

Bottas himself was ranked only 10th in this poll last year and jumped to 4th.

And I can understand Vettel with such a good ranking. He might have made lots of mistakes, but his pace is still there. He's quick enough not to be swallowed by the mid-pack, unless when he gets lapped by everyone because of a stupid mistake.

I just think this ranking is very unfair to Sainz.

See, I automatically assumed you were going for the "grunt, grunt, aaahh!" clip but I was pleasantly surprised

It's a shame he couldn't be persuaded to do more in the BTCC, because it was exactly the right kind of drama and he did seem to take to it pretty well.
