I actually enjoyed this race. Agree with everyone that the second half lacked excitement, but man, that Alonso/Ham/Vettel show at the end completely made up for it.

This is one of those races that make you wish so hard you were there in person. A bit like the Monza podium.

Next year will be exciting - maybe not in pure racing, but at least as a start to see where everyone will be in terms of performance. 12 drivers are changing teams or leaving the field, it's been a while since we've seen such a wild reshuffling (well, behind the first row at least...)

And you'll make it 13 when Ocon gets put in that second Merc seat mid-season. Ok, now I'm just being bitter and negative :p Many other drivers shall be canned from the f1 field before Bottas is.

12 drivers are changing teams, but the two that fought for the title stay where they are.

Not sure how much of this is propaganda, but both Charlie and Renault's Marcin Budkowski (who used to work at the FIA) said that Hulk wasn't 'trapped' in any real sense, and that protocol when they know the driver isn't hurt is to right the car and then get them out. Budkowski added that, had the fire not been controlled so easily, he probably would have been told to get out and that it would have been possible. He further added that he expected Hulk himself would disagree :)

Another interesting little fact from Charlie was that certain types of accident cause the driver's radio to automatically route through Race Control so that they know how the driver is - that's quite a clever idea.

It's hard to say whether Hulk was trapped in the car or not. But it's evident the removal should be done in a slower way once there was no fire there.

Yeah, the FIA loves placing the blame on the driver for things that are fundemantally their fault.... :whistling:

Well Hulk said on the radio "I'm hanging here like a cow, get me out there is fire" Sure doesn't sound like the radio message of someone who could get out themselves does it.

It could also sound like the radio message of someone who was already told that he should wait for the marshals to right the car in the event of a flip and doesn't know the extent of the fire as well as everyone else.

It does make me wonder how often IndyCar and NASCAR drivers complain when they are expected to stay in the car until the safety crew gets to them.

If the car is on fire, they don't wait.

Saying this as a HALO detractor, but if it weren't for the HALO, the car would've easily been on its left side with the cockpit pinned against the barrier, with even less space to escape. There's no need for the FIA to deform anything here to defend the HALO, it stood for itself.
This happened to an Indonesian driver in a lower Formula a while ago in the 2000's, and he was only saved from burning alive thanks to help from a fellow (British?) driver. Can't find the reference or any pictures on Google currently but I've seen the story pop up several times on here.

In the case of Nico anyway, you're better off not moving unless you feel your ass is actually on fire. The car isn't necessarily stable, and you have no visual on how the sidepod can still support the car if it decides to topple on its side. You could be pinned under the HALO while crawling out. Just sit tight like a cow and wait for help.

That's true, it was actually resting on the barrier, not the rollhoop. Undoing the belts and trying to get out could have caused the car to slip off and pin him. As he was in no clear danger from the small fire the team were correct to tell him to stay put.

The crash you were referring to.

This is just stupid.

Since when is Will Smith so important to Liberty btw? Does he want to act as Lewis in a movie about the blessed son of god?

Haters gonna hate, but the Hamilton story would make a great movie in a distant future. From the childhood to rivalries against Alonso/Rosberg, 2008 title at last corner, personal drama and an all-time low in 2011, all the showbiz stuff...

Most F1 drivers in history, some more successful than him, some older than him, have nowhere near as much life in their years as he does.
