The Monaco Grand Prix is the one race of the year that every driver dreams of winning. Like the Indy 500 or Le Mans, it stands alone, almost distinct from the sport from which it was born. A combination of precision driving, technical excellence and sheer bravery is required to win in Monte Carlo, facets which highlight the differences between the great and the good in Formula 1.

The Armco barrier-lined circuit leaves no margin for error, demanding more concentration that any other Formula One track. Cars run with maximum downforce and brakes are worked hard. Overtaking is next to impossible so qualifying in Monaco is more critical than at any other Grand Prix.

The Portier corner is key to achieving a good lap time around Monaco. It is preceded by the Loews hairpin, the slowest corner in Formula 1, and followed by the tunnel, one of the few flat-out sections of the track. Some great names have ended their races in the barriers here, most notably Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

To win in Monaco places a driver's name on a list that includes many of history's all-time greats.

Both Graham Hill, the man nicknamed 'Mr Monaco', and Schumacher won it five times, Alain Prost took four victories, whilst Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart each won here three times. But the record of wins in the Principality resides with the Senna, who won in Monte Carlo six times.

The race has been a regular fixture of the world championship since 1955, but in that time the circuit has changed remarkably little. Slight alterations were made for the 2003 event, in particular a new, gentler entry to the Rascasse corner, with even bigger changes in 2004, with a new pit complex and increased spectator capacity.

Lately, to me, Monaco has just been the boring, stupid excuse of a car race, that puts me in a mood that, whatever the hell happens a couple of hours later in Indianapolis, it's sooo much more worthly of my time, than this non-sense.

I still watch it though

Already posted elsewhere but this really refreshed my appreciation for Monaco, and the fact it really hasn't changed that much in 50 years.

Just here for the pit strategy fuck-up that awards the win to an undeserving.

That footage almost puts anything in the movie 'Grand Prix' to shame.

yet Monaco still has the best place in the whole season for spectators where spectators aren't allowed to be, that is the tunnel

Probably so the reflection of the boats/water/whatever wont be in the drivers eyes while heading into the turn. idk that's the best i have right now.

I have been a staunch supporter of Pirelli for most of their time in F1, they had the luckless task of doing what the FIA asked them to do to spice up the racing...they did it and then were crucified. Now they have seemingly just gone down the Bridgestone route of not really trying anymore. Its bordering on farcical.

It is high time there was a second manufacturer. Or Pirelli can take a hike. Since they caved to Red Bull in 2013 (teams going against the advice of the manufacturer and having tyre issues...who knew!!!), they have just been exasperating the problem of F1's lack of spectacle by taking the middle safe road. We wouldn't be in this situation if there was a second manufacturer. Honestly the softest tyre in the range able to last an entire race distance?? That is just ridiculous.

Or boats "parking" there in the water and watching the race for free

I'm looking forward to the race. Not expecting a stunning race but my kids are over this weekend and last time I already told my daughter there was another race that weekend and she was over the moon. Her watching it with me reminds me of my late father and me.

The first book she picked from the school library also had a racecar on it and was about racing. :D

Because they are reclaiming land to build new appartments and the construction work isn't a nice sight to have on TV ;)

It's a Belgian company iirc that's doing the dredging.

the prince wants to expand the land into the sea so he can earn a big money with properties and so

the tunnel in later years is giving an impression for getting longer and longer since they built the yacht club before the chicane and now with these developments before the tunnel
