FIA has changed their rule to allow drivers to participate in Free Practice sessions.

Now, drivers must have at least 6 F2 races under their belts, or 25 licence points gained in the last 3 years. That's included in the previous rule of 300km F1 experience and some sporting regulations knowledge.

This means that, this kind of drivers cannot take part in a F1 practice session (considering 1 year achievements):

- WEC LMP1 runner-up
- WEC LMP2 champion
- Formula V8 3.5 champion
- Super Formula champion
- 3rd place in IndyCar
- 3rd place in EuroF3

Those qualifiers for each series make zero sense. 3rd place for IndyCar and EuroF3 (wtf in itself) but Super Formula must be the champion?

the difference is that now drivers must also pay FIA an extra to drive on FP1

Super Formula is worth fewer license points than Indycar and Euro F3.

Ultimately, the aim is to try and make F2 bigger than any other racing series below F1. The largest previous threat (FR3.5) has now been killed off. Obviously this isn't feasible for either Super Formula or Indycar so the best the FIA can do is to stop teams from using them as feeder platforms.

That's stupid. Indycar is a top openwheel car. Someone who comes to F1 from there isn't climbing up the ladder anymore, they're an accomplished race driver that is switching disciplines transversally - just like a WEC driver does.

I understand the politics behind it, but when politics gets in the way of having the best people in your field to come over, that's an issue.

the pinnacle of motorsports must not be filled with drivers that races those bulky cars in awful tracks in Murica, but is ok for rich kids that pay for the whole operation (talent included) to win the Euro F3 and F2

Good to see El Presidente and his cronies are focusing on the big issues, like the plethora of talentless hacks running around in FP1 & FP2 just cheapening the whole aspect of F1 and turning away the spectators.

I'm sure that they have taken into consideration that these days before a driver even thinks about stepping foot in an F1 car they've had to prove themselves to the team by driving in their simulators??? I mean as crap as I think Alfonso Celis Jr is, he was hardly 5-6 seconds off the pace every time he stepped into the car.

Watched the F1 17 review, they missed all the midfield action like 3 way battle in spa, they completley focused on crash in sigapore and thats it, no later overtakings, nothing. Cuz it was all about the crash..
In malaysia only 1 single pass of was shown of Vettel from the back. But not a single one from Max in China. So the missed a lot of the midfield battles cuz they were focusing on the mercedes vs ferrari battle all the time even if there wasnt one like in hungary.
So generally a poor review this year. There was so much battle in the midfield and crashes, spins and nothing was shown

A bit like the F1 Digital coverage in 98-99. Focus on the top 4 cars and miss everything else #Spa98 :-p

That's why I don't even bother with them anymore. Much like the actual season, they have just become boring.

Jesus Christ. If NASCAR (huge merchandise business, as well as the world leaders in doubling down on ideas that aren't working) couldn't get that concept over what chance does F1 have?

lol, tent isn't the product sold, it's a big tent that has a lot of F1-related clothing and merchandise that fans can buy.

Sure it flopped in Nascar but what do we know about the European consumer market compared to US? Maybe people like to shop at big stores more? What about in Asia?
Over here during concerts people flock to buy T-shirts and stuff at the temporary stores. Actually, I'm a music fan who is never in the mood to buy merchandise unless I'm at a venue. It costs a bit more but it's worth the time I'd lose shopping in town or even online. And I prefer big stores where I'm left the hell alone to pick and try what I want.

Liberty has been doing nothing but good, refreshing stuff since they took over, and trying something new should not be mocked and shot down before even seeing how the consumer will react. But that's dipshit know-it-all journalism for you.

As the article says, the idea looks good on paper. I'm quite surprised to see it flop in NASCAR. But there could be tons of reasons for it. Too expensive? Teams still had their own stalls? A cultural thing?

It's 9th January and no team other than Ferrari has announced a launch date. I wonder if the apparent halo-related delays are going to result in a string of Barcelona pit lane launches?

all the other teams are with issues. Force India is having problems with their own name, Williams is looking for someone to pay for the other seat, McLaren didn't found a major sponsor yet and Lewis deleted all his social media like a rage quit
