For anyone still wondering(!), the reason Hamilton was not even investigated for reversing is simply that no rule forbids reversing outside the pit lane, as long as it is done safely. In this case, Michael Masi was listening to the radio communication between the team and Lewis, and was satisfied that they were feeding him enough information about oncoming traffic.

Seems like a reasonable explanation.

Of course they can reverse. Latifi reversed when he crashed in FP3, Alonso when went off on way to the grid. There's nothing else to do but reverse if you go wide at Monaco, unless you have enough room to do 180°.

Actually it forbids reversing on the pit straight, which means starting grid. This rule was used to disqualify Nigel Mansell on Estoril.

I remember that some racing series penalize for reversing, but I'm not sure if it's WEC, DTM, IndyCar or Nascar. Or some lower class racing.

You're making things up. Mansell reversed in the pitlane (which is of course forbidden), not on the pit straight.

Ah yes, now I remember the incident. One of Finnish sports media said it was pitstraight and Mansell reversed to his grid. So probably a straight translation with wrong terms. Should have been pitlane and pitbox.

I don't disagree with everything Davidson says in his analysis, but he is missing one point. He says that Bottas was taking a natural line, which is fair enough when you are running by yourself. But if he was using his mirrors, he surely would have seen Russell coming with a massive run and picked a side early to avoid any confusion (the wet/dry lines obviously add a bit more difficulty to this, but plenty of other drivers managed it).

Also, screw Toto and his comments about wasting time trying to overtake a Mercedes. When you've spent years driving the slowest car on the grid and you have a chance to make a move on a front running car, surely any racer would go for it? Who cares if Bottas will take the place back later? If George is faster, why waste time behind another car? That could compromise his own race if it allows others to catch him.

Toto is showing the worse of two evils. Presenting Mercedes as the Ferrari that works treating the other drivers like disposable material, itching himself to demote/fire/etc but not being able to because there's not much resources left to fill the gaps

What an embarrassing statement from Russell now. It looks like Toto wrote it himself.

Pretty sure George sent a draft of his latest Twitter apology to Daddy Toto to sign off on before he posted it.

I think the last time that has happened was Brazilian GP 2016. 8O

Well, Russell was criticized quite a bit during the last 24 hours. He might have caused big issues for Mercedes to develop new components as they have to rebuilt Bottas' car and the budget gap is going to restrict them.

Isn't Davidson still on the Mercedes payroll as a simulator driver or something? Either way he's a massive Mercedes homer. I used to like his analysis but now he has zero credibility in my eyes. I mean his first comment after the race was "Well at least Hamilton finished where he should've if everything went fairly..." Yeah okay buddy.

Nostalgic for sure. But I think a good chunk of the early pages were spent debating the beautiful scenery of Imola versus exciting races in IKEA parking lots.

Davidson shouldn't criticise anyone's overtaking...

I giggled when I saw the news about Russell having to apologize. Shows you Mercedes doesn't need a driver who "still has a lot to learn" like Wolff described him. And he's right. That Bahrain one-off means nothing and Mercedes might still pick someone else to replace Bottas. And I'd be fine with it.

Honestly, this was the most pathetic part of Toto's complaining. Boo hoo, now that Mercedes have been reined in they suddenly have to face a bit of reality at the same time as not having a massive pace advantage.

I don't believe for a second that the best team for the last however many years didn't think to make an allowance in their budget for a wrecked car. If they genuinely didn't, then that's embarrassing for them.
