Sergio Perez says F1 tyre blow-outs are unacceptable

Sergio Perez thinks it is 'unacceptable' that he suffered a tyre failure after a lock-up at last weekend's Korean Grand Prix.

Amid a fresh debate among drivers about the impact of degrading tyres on the racing in Formula 1, Perez thinks the real issue that needs look at relates to safety.

"Tyre degradation is part of the game, it is part of the Formula 1 we are having," explained Perez.

"It is something that all the teams and all the drivers must get their head around - and try to get the best out of it.

"It is obviously very frustrating if you fight a car for more than one lap or two, you destroy your tyre. It means if you are in to a certain strategy you will not complete that strategy, so you have to change things. It just makes it tricky.

"But what is totally unacceptable is that we see tyres exploding. So I think that is totally unacceptable from teams and drivers definitely."

Perez's right front tyre exploded after a lock-up at Turn 1 put a hole in the carcass at the end of his second stint.

The Mexican has questioned, however, whether or not tyres should be unable to cope with the kind of lock-ups that are common place in the sport.

"This is the first time we hear that from a lock-up the tyre can explode," he said. "Then, we hear that this is normal. I think this is not normal at all.

"I think we have seen a lot of lock ups. It is easy to lock up as well; it is a formula car, so it is quite normal that you can lock up.

"But what is not normal and we cannot get used to seeing is an explosion of the tyre with the tread coming out of the tyre. This is absolutely not acceptable from teams, from drivers. It is just not acceptable."

he does have a point. It's not because you made a mistake and locked a tyre, that because of a flat spot it should rip off completely a few hundred metres further. I remember the first Renault world series, were Stoffel Vandoorne had a huge flat spot as well, you could just see his the car vibrating, but yet he managed to finish and win the race.

I agree with you aerogi. Kimi's Michelin tires did just fine at Nurburgring '05, too bad McLaren's suspension did not so well...

Perez was close to the end of a very long stint and was probably struggling to keep pace. The lock-up and blow out was his fault and a symptom of the way the Pirelli's are supposed to work as well as his strategy.

I wasn't making a one-on-one comparison, but a lame attempt to be funny. But even if I would make a comparison, that flatspot was at the end of the race and so you would expect at the end of the lifespan of those tires. I simply agree with aerogi that a flatspot shouldn't cause such instant damage to these tires.

If you have a couple big lock-ups then for the tyre to eventually fail is fair enough but for a tyre to fail after only a single lock-up isn't ideal. Bit that I found odd was that rather than the lock-up burning a hole in the tyre & causing an immediate deflation (As happened with Button during practice in China), It let him drive up the road a bit with the tyre fully inflated & then decided to throw the tread off. I Don't remember tyres of the past throwing the tread off quite as often as the 2013 Pirelli's do?

A little off-topic... this is Mark Webber's last Japanese GP. Did he wear this cap at his 1st?? In other words: Does anybody have a picture of Mark Webber wearing that cap during his 1st F1 season in the Minardi (2002)? Thanks a lot!

Perez was near to the end of a long stint but still pushing hard. The tyre was near the end of it's useful life and was in a fragile state. It's like driving around your road car with a tyre that's got next to no tread on it, then complaining when you get a puncture. Now if the tyre was brand new then I could understand Perez' concerns. But it wasn't. That's it.

Amid all this tyre talk it's really bizarre to look at the videos on page 1 and see Michael Schumacher retire because of a mere puncture in 1998. He has a blowout, no question, but then seemingly gives up and parks it... I know it's looking back on the races of the past with 2013 glasses but it is odd to see someone retire just from a puncture.

As has been said before, there's been evidence presented to explain the punctures. Of course it needs refinement, but it's laughable when people suddenly say they won't fit Pirelli tyres to their road cars. Duh wat?
