It's a cool invention, but honestly, it's so obvious that I really think they hide something.
It can't be legal, as it's first- a safety issue, after all these events and Seannas death and all knee jerk realction throughout 90s, we now ALLOW moveable steering wheel? Really?

A company that's widely rumoured to be dipping out at the end of the season anyway, so who are you really upsetting? Everybody who is going to be racing next year or the team that's taken their toys home in a strop cos they were told their input on the rules wasn't wanted this time (alleged rumour I might add).

Stuff like this is often overplayed. It is not Toto or the team that makes the decision whether to quit or continue, it is the suits in the boardroom and I doubt individual articles in the regulations are very relevant because they have little to do with the general ROI of being involved in the sport.

If it's legal and it brings a huge advantage, wouldn't you hide it for as long as possible?

Less time for others to copy it.

Wonder how much laptime it's worth.

or how long it will take before the other teams use it, causing it to be banned before the end of the season.

It is already banned for 2021.
So some teams will now put an enormous amount of money in designing and producing their own system, only for it to be banned once they have it.

And it might not even bring all that much but they'll be so focused on developing their own DAS that they fail to see the things that really makes the Mercedes fast.

Bottas did a 1m15.732!
That's 0.5s faster than fastest lap of testing last year, and only 0.3s short of his pole lap of the Spanish GP 2019.

In the last couple of years, Mercedes was struggeling (sandbagging) in pre season tests, this year they show no mercy and are just unbelievably quick. And even now, if you follow live timing on Autosport.com, you'll notice how many times Hamilton goes purple in the first and second sector, only to lift of in the last so it doesn't show a fast laptime.

I believe that too, they're the Benetton of our time

Apparantly Racing Point believe they can buy the DAS system from Mercedes as a partner.

Well, it's safe to say Mercedes caught everyone with their pants down again. 2020 title is all but decided by the looks of things.

Red Bull apparently is using "invisible" Flow Viz.

Mercedes have sandbagged in previous years because of confidence that they were already streets ahead. If they're going for it on day 3, I think they already have Red Bull in their heads.

It probably shows up under a black light, quiet a good idea really.

As for on-board cameras @scotty, iirc they are obliged to run them at all FIA sanctioned events (including testing).

The amount of predictions in this thread is pretty funny

Yeah Mercedes look good

But this time last year we were handing the championship to Ferrari

Also there's no prize for winning testing, but as we have seen, the street track of melbourne in an australian late summer is a world of difference from a cold spanish winter test

Red Bull have been...quiet
Ferrari have made "A good step forward"

Most cars have run reliably (so are they even pushing to their extremes yet?)

We just don't know shit

Sure, mercedes are playing games. Probably to get people to hurridly rush into copying this system for 2020 and divert rescources away from their 2021 research programme, which should be well underway by now
It might be a small help, but it might be a bigger help for their 2021 car, even if it is banned on it ;)

During the silly season Mercedes was developing an engine with a new architecture, but got into a big challenge to overcome on reliability. So they developed both new and old engine and are doing a stress test on this new engine to see if it holds. So they don't have time to be messing around.

Source: inside worker to the autoracing.com.br crew.

Another inside source from Red Bull said Red Bull and Honda are going all in. And eventhough Max renewed his contract, it is full of clauses meaning that if he isn't in a direct fight for the drivers championship or something like that, he was free to go looking for another ride if he wishes so.

Unless Ferrari are pulling a massive bluff running 50kg fuel all the time, they're in trouble.
