You'd have to worry about possible brain damage too, the edge of that ramp looks sharp and that close up pic it looks to have gone nearly to the front of the airbox :-(

Yeah :( I was cautiously optimistic after yesterday, but this is just terrible. It's so sad that in trying to get an F1 drive, her career is likely over. Let's hope something positive can come from this somehow.

Going to be a very sombre mood tomorrow.

Damn. Still hope she will recover enough to have a normal life, as it will be possible to have.

This was what I was afraid when I saw that picture and realized it was the loading ramp. :(

She's lucky to be alive after the accident, but her injuries are horrible. Hopefully not permanent, but there's a big chance for that.

I know a person who lost vision from other eye, living normal life with one eye, but without stereo-vision, the depth and distance is difficult to estimate and it almost was obstacle for the drivers licence. So judging by that, Maria de Villota's racing career is definitely over.

I hope her brains were not damaged directly from the impact that would require a big operation and would leave a big mark on her personality. Other friend that I have has been through many brain surgeries because of tumours and the personality changes have been significant and very hard for the family to bear.

This is a sad day for F1 and racing. What astonishes me is how primitive the straight testing environment is, a twisted flashback of the F1 test days of the 80's. The safety standards were finally changed after "another of those freak accidents" when we lost Elio de Angelis back in 1986 at Paul Ricard.

I wish all the best for Maria.

I can't really agree on the complaining of below-par facilities for straight-line testing at locations like these. It's 'just' a freak accident

Losing an eye is terrible for normal life. I don't even know if driving license is possible without stereo-vision. And it's a big obstacle for lot of jobs. I fear everyday to lose one of mines, as I would lost my accreditation (I'm dentist).

Wish the best.

Terrible news, so that ramp must have gone through the visor. Talk about bad luck. If that ramp had been a bit higher it might have glanced of the top of her helmet.

This is terrible, i'm feeling quite bad right now. Hearing she lost her eye and have skull fracture, possibly very bad fracture and maybe even disformed head for what i've heard, and live with that rest of her life.
Freak accident and terrible result, thank god that she made it alive.

The father of one of my mates lost his eye some years ago. I think he can drive but as you said, without the stereo-vision it's very difficult.

I feel actually very bad. Said at yourself you talk a bit with her some years ago, see her racing, and now, said at yourself she's in life treatening, it's really an awful feeling.

All my best thoughts goes to Maria.

That's awful. It has dampen the atmosphere at Silverstone a bit as it is Marussia's (well, Manor Motorsport) home race.

Plus it is bad knowing that it was a test for Maria to look forward to after not racing a F1 car for a while only to have the unfortunate accident to happen.

All my thoughts to Maria, her family and Marussia.

I know what it is like to see a person go through it as my grandfather was blind.

Sad news! This is terrible. With F1 coming to such a high level of safety we can never think of anything like that happening, its just unbeliveable. Just hope she can recover from her other injuries as fast as possible.

I remember saying a month or so ago that one day F1/GP2/GP3 will one day have a major accident that shocks everyone.

Didn't think it'd come in such unusual, bizarre circumstances. It'll be really tough for the team this weekend.

Nowadays cars are so safe that the most serious injuries will probably happen in freak accidents. Massa is example of that, as is this one with de Villota.
