If it hits the helmet at such a speed seems okay. But it's quite scary to imagine that hitting her in the visor. :o

Judging by her injuries and that picture, I think the deck hit her on the visor area. :(

A Dutch newssite (Nu.nl) reports the condition of Maria became worse and worse yesterday. She is also in an artificial coma at the moment. Any truth in that?

I've read that she is under sedation at the ICU in London.

Zanardi was put into an artificial coma as well and though his injuries were horrific, I think it can help the body itself recover.

to be honest I haven't read anything new since yesterday afternoon when they said she was conscious and stable. 'Only' that she was transferred to London for skull fracture surgery.

Yeaa they'll often do that to aid recovery. Especially since she has been in surgery.

Why do the police need to investigate this accident? Why do we need to speculate on consequences that would unlikely ever happen considering this is just a freak accident? Can we calm down please and just hope for the best for Maria?

Perhaps not the police, but surely the FIA should investigate this. If it is something mechanical, you cannot risk to have a jammed throttle entering the pitlane...

Well yes the FIA will likely want to know what's happened but does it need an official FIA investigation? Maybe, maybe not. To suggest that it could happen when a car enters the pit lane is over the top. Let's not make mountains out of molehills.

When a person almost gets killed in a car accident, I don't see anything wrong with the police investigating it.

If anything of this is true it isn't good. Her condition has not improved.

They are fighting to have sight restored in one of her eyes (sort of implying that vision in one eye is lost)

Article also suggests she got caught out by the anti-stall of the ECU.

Yeah it doesn't sound good. Bear in mind from Richard Hammond's drag racing crash any impact like that causes the brain to swell so it'll be a few days before that's recovered.

It could be implying that they're trying to save the sight in one of her eyes, which would be consistent with the angle she hit the ramp, I expect her injuries are to her eyes or face more on the right side (as the car appears to have hit at an angle).

Confirmed, here's the original article in The Mirror: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/ma ... la-1132099

Maybe she hit the ramp with the visor and had a bit of it break into her eye.

Quote:
Further to the accident at Duxford Airfield yesterday involving the Marussia F1 Team Test Driver, Maria De Villota, the Team can now provide a further update on Maria’s medical condition.

Subsequent to yesterday’s official statements from the Marussia F1 Team, the surgical team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge embarked on a lengthy procedure to address the serious head and facial injuries sustained by Maria in the accident. The operation began yesterday afternoon and she was in theatre until this morning. Maria remains in a critical but stable condition.

John Booth, Team Principal of the Marussia F1 Team, with the consent and support of Maria’s family, would like to give the following update, which provides as much detail as is possible at this time:

“Maria emerged from theatre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital this morning after a lengthy operation to address the serious head and facial injuries she received in the accident at Duxford Airfield yesterday.

“We are grateful for the medical attention that Maria has been receiving and her family would like to thank the Neurological and Plastics surgical teams. However it is with great sadness that I must report that, due to the injuries she sustained, Maria has lost her right eye.

“Maria’s care and the wellbeing of her family remain our priority at this time. Her family are at the hospital and we are doing everything possible to support them.

“We ask for everyone’s patience and understanding with regard to updates on Maria’s condition. We will provide further information when it is appropriate to do so and with consideration for her family.

“In the meantime, we would all like to take this opportunity to praise the emergency services at Duxford Airfield, who were on stand-by yesterday, as is usual procedure for a Formula One test.

“With regard to the accident, we have embarked on a very comprehensive analysis of what happened and this work continues for the moment.

“Finally, we have been overwhelmed by messages of support for Maria, her family and the Team and we would like to express our sincere gratitude for those.”

:(

GPUpdate says:

Quote:
Following her accident on Tuesday, doctors have announced that Marussia test driver María de Villota has lost the use of her right eye. The 32-year-old Spaniard suffered a freak crash when her car struck the loading tray of a lorry.

Full report to follow.

Yes. It was a press release, so it's an official Marussia statement.

John Booth also confirmed the team is investigating what happened.
