No. IIRC it was because there used to be so many fires back then, so drivers felt it was better to be thrown out of a car than to be trapped inside it

F1 is an open cockpit formula so shouldn't have a halo at all, but if they're going to have one I'd have hoped they'd have gone with red bulls idea.

So obviously the fia have mandated the Ferrari halo from 2017 :slaphead:

For crying out loud, get your facts straight. Mercedes designed the halo.

For crying out loud, get your facts straight. I think you'll find the Halo was designed by god actually.

Mercedes, ruined racing in the 1950's, ruins the racing in 2010's.

coldtyre, yes, I'm being sarcastic, because halo has been overhyped saying that Senna or Bianchi would have survived with this. Tom Pryce would also survived had the halo been there. But in the 60's things were very different and everyone knows the tragic story of von Trips who was on his way to become the first german to win the championship. Instead Phil Hill got it, but not in the way he, Ferrari or racing world would have wanted it. Jim Clark was also very lucky in that accident, many of the spectators and von Trips were not. There's even a third video (and it's in color) that is recorded by a spectator that was actually hit by von Trips' Ferrari. Truly an awful race in F1 history, and is very close to the first Argentine GP with its somber tone.

Actually I think you'll find it was Moses, since he wrote that big book of fiction that first referenced them ;)

So, how would a halo have prevented von Trips death? Or was that advanced sarcasm?

And great that Tom Pryce might have not lost his life. I'm sure both parts of that marshall is thrilled to hear that.

Yeah, famous people die and get noticed. But that doesn't mean they're the only ones who need protection.

One last thing. Partially related. This Bianchi crap, imagine if he killed a few marshalls, what then? A second sooner or later and he would have. But no, it would never be his fault. Everybody is looking for excuses.

On a completely different note. I hope Mclaren finally realised that they need to get rid of Button. Too bad F1 never got Bruno instead.

While I do agree that F1 spends a lot of time protecting its drivers and its marshals are other support staff are just proles that will show up even without money so don't deserve as much safety attention (look at the disgrace of Hockenhiem 2014, sauber stalled around a blind corner, fuck it, if we brought out the safety car that'll be seen as unfair to our superstar drivers and the precious gaps they have spent so long to build up, you nothing marshals can run out under green and get that car off the track for your betters)

However if Jules had hit a marshal or two then it would be even more of the FIA's fault, they're not allowed to head out onto track without permission from the clark of the course, they were probably cajoled into doing just that.
Marshals should not share space with 200mph racing cars in any conditions, especially not in the dark and wet...

So so many own goals with the FIA. They bring back those tasty fat tyres, the mock up on the Pirelli show car looked good, then they go ahead and bring in the halo. And counter to what a lot of people on here say that ugly piece of crap has no place in F1 as far as i'm concerned.

They still haven't approved it yet even tough next years cars are well under way being designed. Have the teams been given the final specs of thing and just waiting for rubber stamping? Me thinks a ton of resources and money have been spent by the big teams already on researching something that still hasn't even been approved yet. And a final little rant, we still have most cars supporting a semi on the noses which just look ridiculous.

Next years cars could look fabulous, big fat tyres, no halo and no semi's on the noses.

The halo won't stop smaller pieces, it wouldn't have helped Massa that's for sure.

With the screen, that would have been a much better idea and it's not like we haven't seen screens like that in F1 before.

they must develop the aeroscreen because it was taking air away from the air entrances

I guess they'll have to come up with lateral airboxes

From the database I have, the number of living drivers from each Grand Prix season along with drivers who competed. Note that Indianapolis 500 being part of the championship increases the numbers from 1950 to 1960 very much.

Just read a comment elsewhere that brought up something I'd not considered.

The Bianchi family are taking legal action against the FIA, FOM & Marussia but don't seem to be saying anything about the Suzuka circuit owners (Honda) who let's not forget were the one's that prevented the race start time been changed. The FIA had asked the start time be brought forward to 11am in the hope of avoiding the expected worse of the conditions forecast for later in the afternoon but Honda refused to change the start time due to concerns about getting fans into the circuit.

It's quite sad that no one's left from the inaugural season. It also tells that drivers were quite old in 1950, because F1 drivers were mainly European Grand Prix veterans. If a driver had been 18 in 1950, he would be only 84 years old and probably living.
Also, Max Verstappen can be still listed as living on your (grandson's) database in 2100!
