Wasn't it the Renault (or could have been the Merc) that need special dispensation to work on their engines when the V8 engine freeze was first introduced?

I thought it was Merc ... they were down on power and unreliable at first.

Is it forbidden here in Jerez? Is it allowed, and if yes where? I didnt see any lines/signs on track to activate it..

There aren't any restrictions on its use, but there is really no point in them doing so when they are still going through the basics of gathering data on how the cars behave. I wouldn't expect anyone to be bothering with that until they have figured out how to manage the full deployment of ERS.

Autosport have posted a picture of Magnussen and Massa both using it today, so there's that.

Autosport reports that the FIA has demanded information from the teams on the crashworthiness of their nose designs.

Seems unusual, seeing as the FIA mandate the crash tests in the first place!

Glad to see that Magnussen hasn't followed the helmet trend of just slapping polygons everywhere. Just a giant K on the sides.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I think there is no need to highlight the part which is quite awesome.

Who said this?

Also, yeah the limiter doesn't stop you from reaching 400 but what about the engine power? Is it enough to overcome the massive drag at that speed?

F1 cars can reach 400 only in straights like Mulsanne (without chicanes obviously)

I remember one pre-season when Sauber were insanely fast. They topped about 3-4 days of 12. They never even ended up getting a podium that year.

Was this 2010 when they had ridiculously good long run pace? Or one of the earlier ones?

Prost in 2001 is perhaps the most notorious, but then it did prove to be quite a quick car anyway (for a Prost, at least). But people accused Brawn of doing the same and it turned out to be totally legitimate

Even that's not likely these days. BAR just about topped 400 at Bonneville in 2005, with a V10 and non-legal aero.

No!

Even with more powerful V10s, it struggled to pass 400kmh even in a low drag configuration(even without rear wing)
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/21/hond ... onneville/

With 2014 cars, it would be impossible to achieve anywhere near 40kmh no matter the length of the straight

edit: oh shit. Sorry, got beaten to it :p

well, they have turbos, so they can set the boost to 5 bar just for a 5 minute stint and get to the speed with shark fins and side skirts, but no wings (like WM did in Le Mans in the 80's)

I remember that bonneville attempt, good times

Magnussen spun on the asphalt and his car was extracted. Is it just me or do they abandon the cars much quicker during testing? During a race weekend they would just continue after the spin.

Judging by this pic I shamelessly stole from twitter user @irvinef1 (not THAT one), the car doesn't look too damaged.

Image

There's other pictures doing the rounds from the TV FEED (fuck you Sky sports) saying the same.

Strange looking place to go off. I guess he's lost it on the kerbs and over-corrected across the gravel.

Autosport reported that Kyvat had stopped at the same corner, and therefore could have been involved somehow.

From the people I've spoken to, it sounds as if Red Bull has fucked up the packaging and it's simply overheating. STR has a similar problem, but Caterham doesn't because the car is packaged differently.

If that's so, why was Caterham today still told to run the engine at -150bhp off of the max?

Renault have spent the week getting donkey-punched and for a company that is raking in over $100 million per year for its F1 engines it is fucking pathetic.

Going back to this...

Simply put, there are components in the Renault engine which will fail should it be pushed beyond around 75%. On top of this, the RB10 has cooling issues for the energy recovery systems, the engine and various other associated components.

It appears tonight as though the might and utter dominance of Red Bull for the past 4 years is over as they are 6 weeks from Melbourne with a car design unable to accommodate the necessary cooling requirements and a power train unable to complete the race in Melbourne.

Daniel Ricciardo commented, “even if we go to Melbourne, still a bit.. whatever…. It’s a long season”. It appears the message has percolated down that Red Bull and Renault will be seriously behind the curve for some time to come.

Apparently, from what I've read about it, this blog is reliable and predicted the Renault issues a few days ago, as well as accurately predicting some other things last year including Kimi's move to Ferrari

The important bit RtN hasn't quoted there is that the suggestion is it'll take Renault 20 weeks to fix the problem with the engine. From skimming the article and other discussions (albeit with my very basic technical knowledge), it seems it's a crankshaft issue caused by vibrations, of which there are more with a V6 compared to a V8 or V10. This is something that might not have been picked up on the dyno and thus stayed hidden until they actually started running it in a car. The Red Bull's lack of cooling is exacerbating the problem - Newey always cuts it fine, as his later McLaren designs (particularly the MP4-18) demonstrate

I guess the 20 week figure is about how long it would take for them to make a new part - that would take them up to the British Grand Prix, which is basically half the season in the bin. It thus becomes a damage-limitation exercise, although I wonder if Red Bull will suddenly change their tune on the double points race...

Of course, this might be untrue - Renault have a good record when it comes to making reliable engines so people would be right to be sceptical about these rumours. But they don't have an unblemished record either - there is the example of the wide-angle V10 which was very problematic for three years before they finally binned it

Either way, there definitely seems to be something afoot. Caterham had another engine problem today, despite reportedly (according to Eje Elgh) running about 150 hp down on what they'd normally expect
