- The R8 LMS is the new-look Audi, while the Ultra is the 'old' one.

- The ROAL BMW with Zanardi/Spengler/Glock is using complex and brilliant design to help Zanardi (and the other two) to properly drive the race. A ton of background info on the design of that car on DSC: http://www.dailysportscar.com/2015/06/2 ... ngler.html

- The #240 BMW is 'racing against cancer'. Driver & starter of the initiative Pascal Witmeur (did some F3000, F3 and FIA World Endurance in the 80s, and is kind of a Belgian racing 'icon') survived cancer and wanted to do something in return. He's gathered some of the biggest names in Belgian endurance racing with 4-time winner Jean-Michel Martin (father of and 3rd in Le Mans in 1980), 3-time winner Marc Duez (several Le Mans starts) and 5-time winner + record holder Eric van de Poele (with Bentley at Le Mans in 01/02, F1 in the early 90s). They have paid full entry and will act as if they will drive the full race, but in fact the car will only run 24 minutes on 4 occasions: the start, somewhere around midnight, somewhere around noon, and the finish. Everything not spent by doing this (tyres, fuel etc) will be gifted to the Belgian association against cancer. More info (in French): http://www.racingagainstcancer.info/

The official live stream should show all qualifying sessions (if not practice too)... iirc that has been the case with normal BSS/BES races

It's never been the case for Spa. The cameras aren't even set up yet on Thursday. A bit silly really, because coverage of the evening & night qualifying would be awesome.

Check the streaming schedule all the way at the bottom:

This would be the most awesome tagline.

"The 24 Hours of Spa: the race where everyone tries to die"

Vanthoor will win. Just because he wins everything in that Audi.

An interview with Marcus Mahy, the man we almost lost last year with the accident eventually resulting in a red flag:

http://www.dailysportscar.com/2015/07/2 ... -mahy.html

Quote:
Having spent fully three months in various hospitals, firstly in Liège, then in Salisbury, Wiltshire, Marcus has good recall of the lead-up to the accident. “The car had come in out of schedule because Steven Earle had had a shunt at La Source. After we’d repaired that I got in, and that was my first stint in the car,” he explains.

Marcus-Mahy-Spa-2014

“Now there had been a couple of shunts at Raidillon, quite bad ones and I suspect I picked up some carbon fibre because my front left [tyre] started going soft. I was watching the pressure monitor, heading down the hill at the back of the circuit. I started to work the car quite hard on the right-handers to bring the pressure up just to see if it would hold and it seemed to work. Then I got through Stavelot on the run towards Blanchimont and I saw the pressure going down so I knew I had a problem. I moved the car over to the right hand side to let the faster traffic through, because I knew I would be seriously compromised going through Blanchimont [with the soft tyre].

“Well, I don’t really know what happened next. The next thing I knew I had been clipped, hit in the rear, the car went sideways and I stamped on the brakes. But I went head first into the barrier. That’s all I can remember for about a month.”

No wonder. Marcus had sustained severe bruising to his brain, a broken neck, two broken vertebrae, punctured lungs and right ear hearing loss. He also damaged his left shoulder, ribs and chest and stomach muscles.
