Casting the entire generation as dumb isn't fair I'll grant you that, but there's far more idiots out there now than when I was a kid.

Impossible to know since it's now way easier to be a public idiot.

I know this has been used often, but it still works:
Quote:
“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

- Aristophanes (446-386 BC)

or
Quote:
"We live in a decaying age. Young people no longer respect their parents. They are rude and impatient. They frequently inhabit taverns and have no self control."

- inscriptions on an Egyptian tomb

It's a matter of public record:

1990 world population 5.2Billion
2014 world population 7.2Billion

So even if you say the percentage figure of idiots was and still is at 5%, there's 100 Million more idiots on the planet today than there was when I was 18.

</facetiousmode>

*By idiots I mean people willing to do these kinds of crazy stunts without regard for others, idiot isn't the proper description, raving lunatic maybe better.

In terms of racing its a different example, but in terms of generational stupidity, it's no different.

More info about this, anyone know what year? (or did you just make that up as a example )

Spoiler:
Still, Heyer had been faster than two notable names, 1974 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi who had struggled badly in his own Copersucar machine, and the flamboyant Arturo Merzario. Still, he was only third reserve should anything untoward rule some of the starters out - and a long shot to get a run come Sunday afternoon. Nevertheless, he climbed aboard his car as the race approached, perhaps hoping for a last-minute break. But as it turned out, he had a devilish plan up his sleeve...

Perhaps egged on by his team and his long-time sponsors Mampe Halb und Halb, and perhaps trusting in the goodwill of the local officials, Heyer took advantage of confusion at the start. The lights failed, and the German flag had to be dropped to start the race. Then Clay Regazzoni and Alan Jones collided at the first corner. In the middle of all that, Hans drove out of the pit lane and started the race! The crowd, realising what was going on, went ballistic.

Indeed, the crowd seemed to have more of a clue of what was happening than the stewards, who either failed to notice or ignored the illegal 25th car on the circuit. As it turned out, Hans retired after 9 laps with a gear linkage problem having set the 22nd fastest race lap, and it was only after he had pulled out that he was disqualified from the final results. But Hans had left a trail of confusion in his wake; with his non-qualification, his illegal start and DNF, and his disqualification, did he officially start a Grand Prix?

The difference between now and then is we knew if we did something like that there would be consequences, we had the self control to know when things were getting too far, and would stop before it got to that stage. It has been possible to do what this kid did, for the past 40 years at both Brands and Snetterton (heck at Snetterton it was even easier since you didn't need a pass to enter the pits), yet until now, not one person has ever done it, what does that tell you?

In fairness, this has happened before, maybe not in England, but in other places. There's a fairly famous incident here from the early 70s where some spectator in a stock Valiant (the now defunct Australian equivalent of Chrysler/Dodge etc) drove his car onto Oran Park in the middle of a touring car race and did two laps at racing speed. And I recall reading a while back about some drunk spectator who drove his also-standard car onto the track in a middle of a NASCAR race in the early 50s, and actually got crashed into by one of the cars in the race. Admittedly, these incidents are few and far between, but what happened at Brands Hatch wasn't exactly unprecedented.

A judge has told the Brands Hatch moron that, due to the seriousness of his idiocy, a custodial sentence will be considered. He pleaded guilty to a public nuisance charge, and will be sentenced during the week beginning November 17th.

Yeah saw that the other day, case history shows sentencing of between 6 months and a year for similar offenses, but given the loopy nature of what he did' I'd hope for a couple of years at least.

I think the maximum sentence is 10 years.
