DTM could race in Russian Grand Prix venue Sochi in the future

The DTM could race at future Russian Grand Prix venue Sochi within the next two years, according to the man in charge of the series.

Hans Werner Aufrecht, chairman of championship promoter the ITR, said that he had been hugely impressed by the crowds achieved at Moscow Raceway when it hosted the DTM in July this year.

He now believes that the potential marketing benefits in Russia for competing manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes would make a second race in the country hugely appealing.

"I believe the Russian market is so big that maybe one race is not enough," Aufrecht told AUTOSPORT.

"I am sure that in one or two years we will have a race in Sochi too. It is 3000km from Moscow and that is a long way. You can sell a lot of cars in 3000km."

After visiting Russia for the first time this year, the 2014 DTM calendar is indicative of a further shift away from the series' traditional central and western European heartland towards new road-car markets.

Brands Hatch and Zandvoort will not be part of the series and have been replaced by races at the Hungaroring and on a street circuit in either Guangdong or Shanghai in China.

Ah memories (1992 is when I first started watching DTM, there is some F3 racing about 52 minutes into the first video)

It is crazy to consider that it has already been 12 years since the old track was last used.

DTM confirms Chinese race in Guangzhou for 2014

The DTM organisation has confirmed the venue for the Chinese race next year: a street circuit in Guangzhou.
“I’m delighted that we succeeded – in cooperation with our Chinese partners – in finding the suiting area for a spectacular street circuit that will host the DTM race in September 2014,” said ITR e.V. Chairman Hans Werner Aufrecht.

The race will be held from 26th to 28th of September next year, marking the third time DTM races in China.
“To date, we have contested two DTM races, in China, and we have an obligation. In our previous races in China, we didn’t deliver on the top level and therefore, it’s about time for us to provide top motor racing in China, too. I’m convinced that we will be able to do so and thrill the Chinese motor-racing enthusiasts,” said Aufrecht.

DTM last raced in China in 2010, with Gary Paffett as race winner in Shanghai, and the first race, a non-championship round, was held in 2004, also in Shanghai and with Paffett as winner.
“I’m looking forward to seeing DTM race on the streets of Guangzhou in 2014. We wanted to race in Guangdong province because the people there have a good understanding of, and have developed an unrivalled passion for motorsports. Guangdong is also close to Hong Kong, and motorsports fans there will come to Guangzhou to experience DTM”, said Maggie Ip, Chairman of Brilliant Culture Group Co. Ltd.
