Tecpro barriers seem to take an inordinate amount of time to repair

They're expensive too.

At the risk of making Scotty go all troll-faced, that was one of the most perfect demonstrations on why having tarmac runoffs indiscriminately around both sides of a racing track does not instantly make the track safer.

Of course, it can only be speculation because nobody on the planet can say with any degree of certainty what would have happened with a different setup, but the outcome of five or six cars crashing out of the race quite that violently would have been far less likely if there was grass on the runoff where the car spun initially and then sand/gravel where the cars fell off the track on the other side.

I'd go as far to say that if a car had spun off onto grass (or even that feckin' fake shiney plastic grass) in the first instance, it wouldn't have snapped back around quite so quickly, even if the driver did have a brain-fade and forget to lock the car down on the brakes.

And because I've been quite subtle, notice that I've said "tarmac runoffs indiscriminately". I'm for a tarmac runoff area if it is crystal clear than an alternative would be less safe. For example, remember Turn 8 at Turkey? Four apexes and very high speed. Anyone running off there onto gravel or grass would be in the barrier within a couple of seconds at scary speeds. Tarmac runoff allowed for cars to twitch mid-turn, run wide and then hair-raisingly regain control, losing a lot of time/positions. It was still spectacular.

The only issue that remains with the Tecpro barriers in my mind is how a car can bury underneath them in the "right" circumstances. I don't really care if they get damaged to the point of needing replacement easily, because they are a very effective way of absorbing the impact of a high moving single vehicle, and even in this case a number of slower-moving vehicles. They are evidently "soft" and very flexible/malleable, which is what you want from a crash barrier.

Sure, it's frustrating having a red-flag period because they need replacing/repair, but I'm happy to wait an hour if it means a driver/drivers walk away from nasty-looking accidents. Look at it another way if you really have to: you can wait an hour for a barrier to be repaired or you can wait an hour for a driver to be extracted from the car on a stretcher after hitting a less absorbant barrier...either way there's going to be a red-flag period and I'd rather spend an hour bored than an hour anxious.

The thing I have against tarmac run offs is when it becomes part of the race track or when the whole field goes off track at the first corner (as is the case with DTM)

This year is the last of current car so I would assume the change to F2 would be more logical in 2017.

apparently only 21 cars will attend the Barcelona race...

For a series that is scheduled during F1 grand prix race weekends, that is not good.
