Back in the awesome days of CART in the late 90's, during the 98-01 GP's of Houston, I noticed lots more cars seemed to carry onboard camera pods for that one race only (usually 6 cars carried a camera on the roll hoop with the others camera-less), and some of them on closer inspection were just a blank pod with no camera lens in.

Also ESPN / ABC had a policy of not allowing in-car footage from tobacco liveried cars (although Mauricio Gugelmin had a camera fitted exclusively for Brazilian Tv SBT / Ao Vivo), so fitting a camera seemed pointless?

Does anyone have any idea why?

Before they required all cars carry the onboard camera pods to make aerodynamics more equal, I do remember hearing that some teams liked to have the tall camera pod on the rollhoop at street courses where the cars are close to walls a lot of the time to make their cars easier to see for the teams in the pits, etc.

Interesting to hear! Many thanks! Does make sense, although you'd expect the teams to then use the same approach at the other street venues (Detroit, Toronto, Vancouver, Surfers etc) which they didn't. You can see on the side of Unsers unit a "2", with other cars having various stripes on to differentiate from a team-mates car.

Paul Tracy did also carry them at other events (Mid-Ohio, Fontana), non-street events, and not necessarily in subsequent years, which seems a bit inconsistent. (Tracy's they even put a black sticker on it to make it look like a proper camera from a distance!)

Ah, I was always mystified and a bit pissed that they never showed onboards from Penske and Forsythe back in the 90s...

In 2001 Penske sometimes ran a thin strip of carbon on the roll hoop on 1 car I believe for the same purpose:

Damn, if Todt was so set on running turbo engines, he should have just bought up as many old Reynards and Dallaras as he could find.

Such good looking cars. Where did it all go wrong?

Yeah, one selfish Tony George who wanted more americans, made a cheaper series, that turned around and started hiring the same outcomers in the end..... As they go faster. If only they didn't say to Jeff Gordon "Show me the money and we show you the ride" and had a way to open to those. Not that I'm an American, I just wanted this series alive. While outcomers still try, to be good at Nascar you mostly have to have a driving background in things that only exist in US, so that keeps the series mostly protected and thus more popular......

I'm confused, why is Tarso Marques on here? As far as I know he didn't have a Tobacco sponsorship on his car anywhere.

Another observation but from present times, what is the little device that gets fitted just in front of the rollhoop camera during free practice sessions?

It's a camera, probably an infrared one.

Teams are allowed to use their own cameras if they want, but only in practice/testing.
