Presenting the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series:

Welcome to the season opener of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series!
Quote:
For all the talk of a strained economic climate and challenging television package, the Izod IndyCar Series will start its season next week with one of its largest fields of the past 10 years. The series has 24 confirmed entries for the street course race in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The IndyCar Series will open its season on the streets of South America's biggest city, parading through a Sambadrome and a mile-long straightaway that is the series' longest ever. The inaugural Sao Paulo Indy 300 will kick-start the IRL season on March 14, marking the return of Indy-style cars to Brazil for the first time since the CART series ran in Rio de Janeiro from 1996-2000.
"The race in Sao Paulo will be a great show, the track is awesome,'' Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan said. "I can't wait to see the stands filled with fans and to feel their enthusiasm.''
The 2.6-mile temporary street circuit in Sao Paulo is highlighted by the Anhembi Sambadrome, a stadium-like venue where Sao Paulo's traditional Carnival parades are watched by tens of thousands of revelers every year in this city of nearly 12 million people.
A unique feature at the track will be its back straightaway, which at just short of a mile is the longest of all 17 tracks visited by the series this season. It also is longer than any at other venues the series has raced before, according to track designer Tony Cotman. Drivers are expected to reach nearly 190 mph around the halfway point of the straightaway, which runs parallel to the Rio Tiete.
The straightaway, which will be followed by a sharp hairpin leading to the front straight, should provide drivers several passing opportunities. "It's a special circuit,'' Cotman said. "It will provide a great opportunity for Indy and its drivers to put on a good show.'' Cotman said the track is similar to the one in Surfers Paradise, Australia, which also is fast and provides several passing opportunities.
All the action kicks off at first practice on Saturday 13th March.

If you have been absent during the off-season discussions and want a quick update to all the changes and additions for this coming season, click on the spoiler tab below:
Series off-season changes:
The IZOD brand becomes the IndyCar Series' new major sponsor for 2010.
Late in 2009 Tony George left his role the leader of the IndyCar Series. He has since been replaced by Randy Bernard, whose vitae includes being head of the Professional Bull Riders. Bernard is now in full charge of both IndyCar and Indy Lights Series (as of 1st March 2010).
The push-to-pass ability (aka Honda Overtake Assist) has been increased in horsepower to double what drivers had in 2009.
The 4-position fuel mixture switch has been removed so cars will only be able to run on "full rich" or "yellow" fuel settings.
All cars will have a reverse gear at all street and road circuits in 2010.
Team & driver changes:
2009 Champions Chip Ganassi Racing, Panther Racing and A.J.Foyt Enterprises all enter 2010 with an unchanged line-up.
Penske racing is fielding three cars full-time in 2010, with the new addition of Will Power driving the #12 Verizon Wireless car. For the first time in many years, Penske will be fielding a new livery due to the drop of tobacco sponsorship.
Andretti Green Racing Changes Name into Andretti Autosport due to Andretti's business partners' decision to split from racing. The team will continue to field 3 cars full-time in 2010. The only change to the team is the loss of Hideki Mutoh being replaced by Ryan Hunter-Reay under IZOD sponsorship for selected races in 2010.
Dreyer and Reinbold Racing will run two cars full-time in 2010 with British duo Justin Wilson and Mike Conway. Wilson takes the Z-Line Designs sponsorship along with him from Dale Coyne. Ana Beatriz may well get a few drives in a third car in selected races in 2010.
de Ferran Motorsports has merged with Luczo Dragon Racing for 2010, and plans to continue fielding one car for Raphael Matos full-time. Davey Hamilton will field a second car in a few races in 2010, including taking part in the Texas race, the scene of his devastating accident.
KV Racing Technology has expanded operations in 2010 and is running a suprising three car line-up, with the drivers of Takuma Sato, EJ Viso and Mario Moraes driving the #5, #8 and #32 respectively. James Rossiter and Paul Tracy are expected to field a fourth car in selected races.
HVM has partnered with former Atlantics team Stargate Worlds (US Racetronics), and will run Swiss girl Simona de Silvestro in the #78 entry full-time this season. She has shown promise last year in the Atlantics series, and finished pre-season Barber testing ahead of Danica Patrick. The team has also announced the possibility of expanding operations with a more experienced team-mate in future races.
Dale Coyne racing has also expanded operations two cars in 2010, and will the #19 Boy Scouts of America car (driver for full-season unconfirmed), and Milka Duno will run the #18 CITGO entry in full-time effort; her first full-time drive in IndyCar.
Conquest Racing will return to the IndyCar Series full-time this year after completing a deal with Indy Lights driver Mario Romancini.
New entry FAZZT Race Team will compete in the IndyCar Series full-time for 2010 with driver (and co-owner) Alex Tagliani, after the purchase of Roth Racing assets.
Vision Racing co-owner Tony George has suspended racing operations due to an apparent lack of sponsorship.
I actually cannot wait... hopefully the Indycars will provide a spectacle if the F1 fails to!! This is going to be awesome!!

Can you believe it? - This is a 2-day event (Sat practice + qualy), Sunday race, and there is NO support series whatsoever. - No general admission - average ticket price = > $150US, which is more than any US IndyCar event, I believe. - track asphalt was just laid in the last month and won't be complete until Thursday - first FIA inspection was this week, final inspection still to be done (once track is complete)

Sport TV had the portuguese rights for IRL last year, but it seems they lost them, or they are only gonna show the Indy 500.
Search for Band Network live stream, Band officially broadcasts races live in Brazil, so you can watch with portuguese commentaries. I don't think it's rare to find Band live streams, guess you can find it in http://www.tvtuga.com, in the options "Brasileiro".

There's a reason for that. I don't remember any street race in a city that overcomes 15 million people in a World metropolis, currently ranked as the 4th largest city in the World. Two of the main straights of the road course (Marginal Tietê and Assis Chateaubriand) are highly busy avenues, so there was a certain pressure not to close it on a Friday.

Shut up. You're probably the same guy who finds our quotes and posts them in CCF just to feel better about yourself.

Not much was said in the english press about the track inspection last week; but thats because its more of a formailty than anything special. Charlie Whiting was said to be impressed with the current progress.

No support races is pretty shitty for the fans at the track though.... NASCAR can get away with it cos their races last forever.... Even with cautions etc this race will be done in under 2 hours, so not exactly value for money...

All I was trying to say was that they are taking a huge risk and creating headaches for themselves that they don't need. IndyCar wants to impress their Brazilian sponsors but if the event is less than perfect it could be an embarrassing mess. Why put yourself in that situation?Maybe everything will work out, great for them if it does. But if it doesn't - if the track wasn't ready in time, if the asphalt breaks up because it's too new, if the fans don't fill the stands because the ticktets are too expensive for them, if the fans don't buy tickets because the schedule only has 1 series with lots of down time between sessions, if the fans don't buy all the tickets because most of the seats are on a straight where the cars will fly by and there is no general admission so you can walk around a find a good spot on a corner under a tree maybe, if the fans don't buy tickets because the weather at this time of year is bad - then the event will not be a success. It is a huge gamble. So far it seems it is paying off.

Compared to the Fomula One ticket prices, the IndyCar tickets are much cheaper, but I don't think that R$ 100,00 ($ 56,10) as the average price is that popular either to the latin-american standards. Last years F1 cheapest ticket was R$ 127,00 ($ 71,25), but at least it's F1 - worlds most important series and it was in a closed facility specially made for this kind of event. Now for an IndyCar race in a street course, I think the minimum price should have been at least R$ 80,00.
Just to make a comparison, when CART came to Brazil from 1996-2000, some tickets were sold by R$ 30,00 ($ 16,83) which is as cheap as tickets for football/soccer nowadays - those were other times indeed. Despite all that, organizers already expect full capacity for SP Indy 300, all stands might be packed because people from SP just love racing, no matter what! I wanted to go but I'll have to work in that particular sunday, but I'm looking forward on going there next wednesday and then on saturday to take some pics.
It's a shame there won't be support races....with so many series that could make it. Two racing series that are making its debut in 2010 here in Brazil, Formula Future and Trofeo Linea both from FIAT could have been added by the organizers...
