For sure, but lots of the other tracks (especially newer ones) aren't much better. COTA only has about 4 corners as well.

I get the point is to be part of the F1 group and increase exposure that way, but it doesn't really work as an academy if they are racing on unsuitable tracks where they aren't learning what they should.

(and yes, I know the whole, exclusive point of the series is to make F1 look better to certain demographics and hedge funds, but you can at least put some thought into your pinkwashing)

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I found that accident really difficult to even see considering they pretty much missed it...

That was a fun race though, maybe not Spec Miata level racing but potentially more fun than the F1 race.

Pin got a 20 second penalty for taking the flag twice.

Wow, she messed up initially, but her team really let her down based on the radio silence after she asked if it was over.

Apparently Prema said the radio wasn't working and argued that the flag wasn't shown early enough for her to see.

Well we can't have her winning every race because she's talented can we? We need to invent some bullshit ways to hold her back so she doesn't win every race.

Seriously though that is a fucking dumb penalty. Despite F1 Academy being held on Grand Prix weekends it's clear that no effort is being put into their races in terms of race direction/organisation/officiating.

To be fair, they all disappeared long before the chequered flag came out.

If young drivers are now being taught to obey the light panels before the physical flags then it seems odd that there isn't a lighting arrangement for the end of the race.

I think one of the problems this series has is that it races on circuits that are too big for the cars. How many actual corners are there on this track in these cars? 3? 4? They should be racing on smaller, slower tracks that are a better fit.

Having a race in Jeddah for this series was more of sportswashing gimmick than anything else.

Not sure what was most sportswashey here. The fact they raced in Jeddah or the fact that the first race conveniently happened on March 8th.

Maybe if they put some actual professional flag wavers down instead of some celebrity who can hardly lift the flag, we would not have had this problem. This lady in red there had no place doing that job, just like jeremy Clarkson last week. He was also too late to wave the flag, they misjudge the speed of the cars and wave the flag when the car is already past.

Yeah, pretty harsh to penalize the driver due to the mistake of the team, chequered flag waver and the track workers.
When you race in Europe, there's no mistaking it whether or not the race is over.

Much harder to do that on a street circuit though.

That is one of the worst penalties since that DTM one from years back when the driver had that water bottle in their overalls

I noticed that IndyCar have an official waving the flag properly behind the celebrity, but kept mostly out of shot on the camera. That seems like the most sensible compromise - the sleb gets to half-heartedly wave a flag while somebody else does it so the drivers can actually see.

They've got an LED screen right there too which displays SC and rain notices, why couldn't that indicate the race was over? Easier to see than a checkered flag.

Why does the FIA allow people who are not in any way qualified or responsible wave the flag in the first place?

the engineer doesn't keep track of the laps for the drivers? Or that might increase the pressure?

Radio wasn't working according to Prema. Don't know if there's anything stopping them from putting out pitboards though.

You know what's amusing, just to back over this one, is that Jeremy Clarkson, who waved the checkered flag in Bahrain, admitted that he actually waved it to Lance Stroll first, not Max Verstappen. He admitted he was drunk when he was given the honour.

Then a week later, this happens.
