Bah. That was nonsense. Wilson probably would've got passed him anyhow, but it would've been nice to see him actually pass Helio. Plus it hurts quite a bit in the points as it would've been 10 more points for Helio. Instead of a 20 point lead for Dixon it's 30...

Im happy to see Justin win, especially because of the situation with Paul Newman's very ill health, but I really hate that the win came because of a really dumb decision from the officials.

With the speed he had and Castroneves having to play it safe, I think he would've got by him at some point...

That may well be true but if he was faster Id have much rather seen him have to fight his way past.

Oh no question, but it's not like he was trolling around in second and had ONCE half chance to get by and was handed victory on a plate, he had the speed to take the win so it is not an undeserved victory. ;)

Speed isn't everything, you also need the skill to pass the driver in front.

This race seemed very Champ Car-like. Not necessarily in the good way either.

At least there wasn't a penalty for hitting a cone :)

That's pretty harsh to give a penalty for that. Wilson had the space, it's not like Helio was pushing him in the direction of the wall.

My thoughts exactly. Oh well, great to see a different face in victory lane.

I mean there was enough Room for Wilson. You cant call that a "Dangerous" Blocking Manoveur.

If Helio would have done that manouver more than once, I would have understood the penalty or if Wilson would have lost time/positions because of this. Bad call, but I hope that ICS learns from this incident and doesn't shoot its legs off.

I don't quite understand either what was wrong with this move. Fair racing and legitimate blocking of a crucial position.

I think Wilson had the speed and was just about to draw alongside but he had no choice but to back off. That's a block in my view. If Helio had made his defensive move before Justin was already looking up the inside then that would have been ok. It's very touch and go and still a little sad to see the race end that way. I think Wilson would have made it past eventually so the result would have still been the same. But we'll never know for sure.

ICS should banish that rule altogether.

Why are there rules against blocking again?

They aren't 8 year olds out in go-karts, let them race for God sake.

I think it's where you draw the line between "blocking" and "defending". I'd say that if you squeeze a car and force it to brake or go off the road then that is a block. If you cover the inside and then allow the other car a run to the outside then that is defending.

Unless the IRL doesn't allow you to move your line at all. Which would be lame. I wouldn't know how to judge the Wilson/Helio incident. Aggressive defending or a tame block?

Exactly. You are allowed to move to the inside to defend your line if the car behind you moves there. But back up again that is blocking. So, if you have a rule like that, that is how it should work...

How does the IRL handle that on a Speedway?

Because blocking in open wheel cars is very, very dangerous. Making a move off the line is fine, but going back on it is pushing luck.

Especially when they're racing IRL Dallaras
